Hi there.
I have a Mary Montgomery (Domestic servant) born 1866 Donegal, who immigrated to Tasmania and arrived in Hobart 3 Feb 1884 on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The records state she is going to work for a Mr Waller. Many, Wallers in Tasmania. Because I have had trouble finding any infomration on Mary I decided to look at the passenger list again and see if anyone else was immigrating to work for Mr Waller and maybe trace them for at least an area of residence. I found a Michael McSharry (labourer) and Susan Peoples (Domestic servant) but am also unable to trace their whereabouts. I imagine Mr Waller was either a farmer or had something to do with mining. I did think maybe he advertised in Ireland, but a fellow rootschatter looked in the Freemans journal and found nothing.
Mary died in 1940 in Tasmania and the only death I can find for that year is a Mary Montgomey married to a Robert Montgomery. I have no idea if she married, or had children. Although I have found a few marriages, none so have proven to be her. There are a few Marys on the Electoral roles but I was hoping to find something close to the time period she arrived. I'm just not having any luck.
What is my best course of action. Is the historical Society a good place to start

I am unsure what information you know to be fact, what you have come across in your research, and what outcome you are wanting.
You have Mary, died Tasmania, 1940..and you do not know if she was married or unmarried.
Is this woman the subject of your research, and you have been looking for her background?
Or is Mary Montgomery, arr. Tasmania 1884, the person of interest to you, and she might be the woman who died in 1940?
Can you name the woman who died in 1940 with any details you know about her, and the death...date, place.

Hi LIL
Perhaps a co-incidence, but . . . .
There was a marriage in TAS for a Mary MONTGOMERY to Henry James TUTTLE at Glenorchy (supposedly) in1890.
Also,
A Mr G A WALLER, a J.P. for the Glenorchy Police Courts in the 1880s.

Mary and Henry are worth me looking into, thanks. what is the peerage? I've not heard that term before.. GA Waller is a good start :)
Majm, nice to see you again :) Thanks for the news article. I hope I can tie them all in.
Wivenhoe the 1884 immigration and 1940 Tasmania death year dates are for the same Mary. The death date is from my mothers tree online and it's private. She is also deceased.

George Arthur Waller (1835-1923) seems to have been from Tipperary- born & died there:

Lil, the peerage are Lords and Barons.
The George Arthur WALLER and wife Sarah Harriett ATKINSON are listed in the Colonial Tasmanian Family Links with two sons born 1882 and 1884.
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=8
Family trees have them with a number of children after their marriage in 1865. I have not seen their deaths nor leaving TAS mentioned in TROVE, and do not doubt that they may have returned to Ireland.

See that one of the sons listed has Guinness as middle name which makes sense as G.A. Waller was chemist with Guinness Brewery.

George and Sarah WALLER and six children arrived in VIC on the ship MELBOURNE in Aug 1882, and were outward bound on the ship MANAPOURI for NEW ZEALAND via HOBART in Aug 1882.
I certainly think they needed servants!
I wonder if they even made it to New Zealand? GA Waller of New Town was elected to the Royal Society of Tasmania in April 1883.

Think this is the Henry Tuttle Essie is talking about.
Henry Tuttle buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery Hobart 2/06/1952.Was residing at 21 A Gatehouse Street Moonah Tasmania.(Moonah not far from Glenorchy)
Widower of Mary Tuttle.
Buried with him is his son Vincent Montague Tuttle aged 13 who was buried 23/05/1917.
Also buried with him is George Thomas Ray who was buried 21/07/1970.
Here is the death notice for the wife of this Henry Tuttle.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/26441355?
The children in her death notice match with a few born before 1899 to Henry and Mary Tuttle (nee Montgomery). I could find no marraige for Henry and Mary.
Looks like this Mary died in 1947 in Sydney.Could be a completely different Henry and Mary than what Essie found but I would say its the same couple.
There is another Mary Tuttle who was residing in Glenorchy at the time of her death but her age in 1918 the year of her death was 82 so no match for Mary Montgomery born in 1866

Obviously you have the incorrect information:
The Mary MONTGOMERY age 86yrs that died in 1940 at Branxholm, TAS was married to Robert Bertram MONTGOMERY.
Her maiden name was DAVIS. Mary, Robert & their children are well accounted for in the indexes & newspapers.
-
A researcher of Henry James TUTTLE has his mother as Mary. Henry and Mary nee MONTGOMERY had nine children listed by the researcher but not all named, and those named more or less match the children *named in the death notice of Mary TUTTLE in Sydney.

Jack = Patrick John
Harry = Henry
Syd = Cedric
Fred = Frederick
Annie = Ann
Yes johngirl, I believe this was the same Henry and Mary that I found.

Their other four children appear on the index.
All born at ZEEHAN
Father: Henry TUTTLE
Mother: Mary TUTTLE nee Montgomery

Hi Everyone
You've all been so busy. I did see a marriage also for Mary Montgomery and a George Sloane, that was after 1884. I can't find it again. There is a child Nellie Clark Montgomery and a Margaret Sloane.
Essie..I've a lot to learn still:) It would make sense that someone from the Peerage would require staff. With Aghadoweys find that henry was from Ireland, that may solve the issue of how the others came to here of employment. Susan and Mary were from Donegla and Michael was from Liethrim (spelling)
Merlin thanks for the information on Davis, I do stand by the 1940 death date, everything else I have sourced form the tree so far has been correct, but it does still pay to be flexible.

George and Mary married 1909, in Tasmania, Ancestry and Nellie was born in Mercy 1890. She maybe illegitimate, Pioneers index

If the online family tree details are correct then the Wallers were from Tipperary (although a Dublin connection with Guinness) then that's nowhere near Donegal, or Leitrim, where Mary, Susan and Michael were supposed to be from.

Hi Aghadowey
Thank you, Could it be possible though that they family may have advertised from within Ireland to other Counties? . I don't know enought to fully explian what I mean. But didn't Offices (probably not the tern used then) offer assited Immgration? etc

Hi Lil,
There were various Emigration Agents at various times who roamed the UK looking for suitable persons to offer them free or sponsored packages to the Antipodes. Some of those Agents were appointed by the Colonial authorities. I am fairly sure they did advertise throughout Ireland, and also throughout the English Counties. I refer to these schemes collectively as "Emigration Plans". I think Julius Vogel was behind one such plan for NZ. I have not ever researched re TAS emigration plans, sorry.
Cheers, JM

A suggestion from another chatter was to contact the Tasmania State library. I have contacted them online regarding whether they may have addtional information on the passengers list for Mary and possibly further information on Mr Waller It may take up to two weeks before I received a reply.

I'll just add this site from Pastmagic on the Ireland thread. http://www.alleylaw.net/tasmania.html

Hi there
I've been looking online for either Mary Tuttles parents or an age at death in 1947. She doesn't appear to be buried in any of the cemeteries that service Earlwood but on the NSW BMD site there is a death for a Mary Tuttle 1947 Canterbury. Parents are Patrick and Mary (no surname given) A google search shows that Earlwood is in the city of Canterbury. Unforatunatley the parents for this Mary above aren't the same as my Mary's parents... hers are George and Mary. I will have a look into Mary who married george Sloane.
Thanks

Hi Lil,
I will see what I can find on the NSW electoral rolls ;D
Do remember though that the online index is actually a transcription in itself. And it is based on the registration details forwarded to the NSW BDM. The informant's details will be on the d.c. as will the funeral details showing the cemetery/cematorium. And, as usual, the information about the deceased is only as reliable as the informant's own knowledge.
Have you checked TROVE for the death/funeral announcement? I think Trove and Papers Past are two of the best resources in the world ;D
Cheers, JM

LOL Why not! I have blonde ones regulary ;D

I forgive you JM. ;D
Pity in the obituary for this Mary Tuttle they didn`t give how old she was when she passed on.There are quite a few memorium notices also in the SMH Newspaper from her children but still doesn`t give how old she was when she passed on. :'(
Did you find anything interesting JM or was it a dead end with this Mary Tuttle(Montgomery).
There were quite a few Tuttles that lived in the Glenorchy area in Tasmania.I knew one of them many years ago. ;D
I can`t find a marraige for a Mary Montgomery to a George Sloane in Tassie before 1899.

The SLOANE/MONTGOMERY marriage was 1909:
SLOANE GEORGE m. MONTGOMERY MARY 28/01/1909 #765
Place: ST ANDREWS MANSE, LAUNCESTON

Mary TUTTLE that died 7 Dec 1947 at Earlwood NSW was cremated at Rookwood Crematorium Tuesday 9 December 1947.
The funeral directors were T J Andrews of 25 Enmore Road Newtown.
If you contact Rookwood Crematorium they will be able to advise you of her details from the registry.

My manners are lacking, thank you for the find on Mary Tuttle's death, Merlin has found her details for Mary at Rockwood Crematorium, thank you Merlin, and for the marriage details. I have a friend in Sydney, I will ask if they mind calling Rockwood, as they don't appear to have an email address.
George and Mary Sloane. I have found them on the electoral roles in Wilmont, Kentish. George died 28 Feb 1921 and is buried in Sheffield cemetery. Mary then appears in Darwin Kentish, in 1922, It's possible they may have had a daughter Violet Pearl, later electoral roles have her with her daughter Margaret who is a school teacher. Mary died 18 feb 1961 aged 91 years, she's buried with her husband in Sheffield. I'll contact the cemetery and ask if they have any further details on Mary.

Hi Everyone
I have heard back from Tasmania Library and am really pleased with the reponse from them.
Their reply:
I have checked the Commonwealth electoral rolls for Tasmania 1883-84 and these are the Waller entries
1.William Waller – house and land at Franklin (southern Tasmania) J Lloyd owner of the house.
2.Charles Waller at Beaconsfield (Northern Tas) – house
3.W F Waller, land at Castra (Northern Tas). WF Waller lived in India
As a matter of interest, a Michael McSherry (aged 26) married Louisa Earle in Hobart on 2 January 1893. This implies that he was living in southern Tasmania and may have worked for William Waller at Franklin.
It's possible that McSherry maybe McSharry that travelled on the same ship as Mary.
I shall have a look at these areas for Mary. I am still awaitig to here back from Rockwood regarding Mary Tuttles age.
Thanks again for helping :)
Regards
lil :)
