I believe that two monumental inscriptions numbered E43 and E50 have been recorded for the Harvey family in Rye St. Mary's churchyard. There is also a Harvey M.I. at Rye Baptist Chapel no.0008. I would appreciate a look up for all three inscriptions.
Thanks, Viv.

Rye Cemetary ESRO
Harvey Henry 12 Feb 1882 Non-conformist I was sent a list of Harvey burials from the SFHG. This is all I have on Henry. Other entries had ags and statue such as widow. Any way to confirm that he is the one married to Jane. Thanks LizR

Hi Viv,
I came across your thread, as just tonight I have come across the same inscriptions on the Harvey famiy (bought the booklet of Rye inscriptions at a genealogy fair last weekend!) and was scouring the web this evening for any information on the demise of the Cumberland.
My cousin and I are delving into the Harveys of Rye, and the E43 batch, at least, certainly sounds like "ours". Haven't checked out the others yet. We visited Rye last summer, and managed to find Rock Channel House.
Our Harvey relatives later went to Portsmouth, London and Warwickshire. Does this tie up with yours at all?
Angela
EDIT
PS Chris, I was not "allowed" to download the churchyard plan that you have affixed to your post. Maybe I do not have enough posts to qualify to receive attachments yet, or something?

Hi folks, me again...
Marinerclark, I notice the name Lilbourn in your signature.
"CLARK Waite Ashley Gravett Vousden Lilbourn Rye Sussex,"
In my records, I have the Nicholas Harvey who "unfortunately drowned in Rye Bay" as married to a Mary Lilburn/Lilborn/Lylbourn. She was baptised in Rye 1712; parents Philip and Mary.
Any use to you?

Hi Angela Welcome to Rootschat and the family. My connection to the Harvey is my 4 greats grandfather Henry Clark 1759-1832 sister Mercy.
she married Nicholas Harvey in 1785. many Nicholas Harveys. Parents of mercy and Henry Philip Clark and Mercy Waite. This week I finally found a record confirming Philip Clark as a Mariner. Letters of Marque were granted to the Swallow in 1757 found on the National Archives Captain of the Swallow was Philip Lilburn.
My Lilbourne connection is Elizabeth Libourne wife of Richard Vousden Parents of MaryVousden b. 1702 mary was Philip Clarks mother. Richard Vousden dies shortly after Mary's birth and Elizabeth remarries. have to look up who All happens in Rye. What is your Lilbourne connection. LizR

Thanks Chris, the churchyard plan arrived fine just now.
Marinerclark,
the Nicholas Harvey who "unfortunately drowned in Rye Bay", married to a Mary Lilburn/Lilborn/Lylbourn, is my 5xgreat grandfather.
Yes, there were an awful lot of "Nicholas Harveys"! I do find them a bit confusing, I must say...
Viv,
Looking at one of the Nicholas Harveys mentioned in the E43 inscription above, "... Captain of the 'Cumberland'
who was lost with his wife and crew Sept .. 1829 aged 29"; this chap appears to be slightly off to one side of my tree.
I have come across the 1831 baptism, in Rye Baptist church, of a Nicholas Cumberlander Harvey; parents James Harvey and Ann. It seemed such a strange middle name, that I can't help wondering if it might be connected with the couple who died on the Cumberland in some way. In the 1861 census he is a painter, living in Hastings, as "brother" of Martha Golding.

The Admiralty document on Philip Lilburn is HCA 26/8/33. This is a Letter ofMarqu for the Swallow a 6 gun sloop. More crew is listed and the investors. Any one know how to trace pay out of prize money. It was 1757. LizR

Hi Angela,
The Nicholas Harvey who unfortunately drowned in Rye Bay was my great x 6 grandfather. The name Nicholas has been frequently used in the family but I may be able to help you to sort them out. The Nicholas above married 4 times. His first wife Hannah (don't know surname), had a son Lester in 1730. His second wife, Mary Lilbourne had two sons, John and Nicholas. The latter died in infancy. His third wife Jane Willis had a son Richard who also died in infancy and his fourth wife Elizabeth Cooper bore him 7 children. Nicholas her son, born 1752, was my great X 5 grandfather.

Viv Our Philip Clark 1730-1806 may have been the boatswain and a Thomas Clark was the carpenter. Possibly Philip's brother on the Swallow. Have found which prizes they took in the October London Chronicle in 1757 LizR

Gosh Viv! Fancy all those wives!
That does indeed help make sense of things a bit, now that I can link him to so many spouses.
I wonder if the Hannah who was NH's first wife might have been nee Baker. I found a marriage of a Nicholas Harvey to Hannah Baker in St Olave's church, Southwark, in 1729. Of course, there's nothing to prove that it's the right one, but Nicholas and Hannah's child Lester was born in 1730...
Sorry to have been so long replying; I forgot to check the thread for a bit!
Many thanks for the further info.

Viv and Angela and other Harvey researchers. I am rereading old posts and found the reference to Mary Lilbourn married to Nicholas Harvey. Itis possible her father Philip was brother to Elizabeth Lilbourn in my line. Elizabeth born 1676 and Philip 1680. Their father Philip wrote his will in 1696 and probate was granted 20 Oct 1707. Will is summarized on the ESRO website. Lilbourns owned land around the Landgate in Rye and were herring dealers. I am beginning to realize how interrelated all these families were. Hoping to hear of your progress LizR
