Title: US Federal Census Mortality Schedule lookup please
Post by: Jang on Monday 07 November 11 02:45 GMT (UK)
Could SKS check the US Federal Census Mortality Schedule please for Terrance KEATING born ca 1839 Ireland died Dec 1880 New Jersey please? I found him in the index but don't have access to the full entry.

I'm trying to determine if he's my Terence KEATING baptised Dec 1838 in Ireland. He may also appear in the 1880 census - I'd love to know if he had any family or any other clues that might confirm he's the right one.

Many thanks
Jan

I see Terrence born about 1839, age 41 cause of death 'Fac of Vertibia', married, laborer, died Dec 1880 in Elizabeth, Union, New Jersey.

There are several other records. One lists his date of death as Dec 8, 1880.

And  the 'Elizabeth Merchants' Union Directory 1876', has Terrence Keating, occupation Moulder, address 23_ (last digit illegible) Magnolia Avenue.

Let me know what else you need.  I'll be happy to help.

Many thanks, maryn1913, that's the one. Thanks also for the info from the directory.

Would you mind having a look in the 1880 census for a wife or children?

Jan

Hi again,

Siorry, I just realised I had checked this lead before - doesn't say much for my note-taking :-(

I found a death for Mary Keating in Jan 1880 in  Elizabeth so possibly Terrance's wife.

I also found two children to a Terrance and Mary Keating (nee McCronk or McCrink) - Adelaide b 1877 and Catherine Anna b 1879 both in Elizabeth but no further sign of them.

Maybe they were fostered out or adopted.

There is a New Jersey Archives death index that covers this time here:  https://wwwnet1.state.nj.us/DOS/Admin/ArchivesDBPortal/DeathIndex.aspx  That gives Terrance's death as 1879, but there is a record here that gives it as 1880:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/MTBJ-KNS/p1

Thanks, great site. A bit confusing though, with the two different death dates.

It is rather odd.  It seems that the 1880 Mortality Schedule should have covered Dec. 1879 rather than Dec. 1880, so I'm inclined to think the 1879 date might be correct.  http://www.deathindexes.com/censusmortality.html

Just my opinion, but when a death occurs, it needs to be registered with the state.  All that official stuff takes time as government workers are known for their ability to make the job last as long as possible (job security).

So, if he died on Dec 8, 1879 his death certificate was probably not REGISTERED until January 1880.  That's probably why it was listed on the 1880 census count for deceased people.

Anyway, was his wife's name Margaret?  If so, she may be the same Margaret who  died in a TB hospital around the same time.  Still looking  at that one.

As mentioned on the site I linked to in my post, the 1880 Census mortality schedule asks for the names of people who died between 1 Jun. 1879 and 31 May 1880.  When the death was registered wouldn't have any impact here.

Thanks, it looks like Jan 1880 is the right date.

Maryn, I'm not sure who his wife is. It thought it might be a Mary McCronk or McCrink because of the two children's births I found.

I can see I made a mistake - it was Margaret's death I found in 1880, not Mary's so she could still be alive in later censuses.

Is there a Mary Keating with children Adelaide  b1877 and Catherine Anna b1879 in the next (1890?) census?
