Title: WORTH of Tiverton
Post by: vivijune on Saturday 05 November 11 19:52 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to find a birth record for a William Worth who married Mary Symonds in 1744 in Tiverton. I would estimate he was born around 1720. There's a chance he might have been born in the village of Washfield two miles outside town. This is the most important record I'm trying to find.

I'm also attempting  to find the birth for a Bampfylde Worth, again probably born around the same time. I know he was the son of Edward born in the town in 1678 who was the son of Thomas, but there's no record of Thomas' birth.

When I tried to pull up marriages for Tiverton in the parish church prior to 1740 I wasn't able to pull up any records. Refering back to Bampfylde, or a Thomas Worth born in 1729 or a John Worth born in 1777 who I believe married an Elizabeth I'd appreciate any marriages for that segment prior to 1740.

Thanks in advance. I appreciate the help

That's awesome! I have to ask you this but where are you finding this? I notice we seem to have the same amount of experience on Rootschat and you seem light years ahead of me.

There seems to be what I'll call a Bangfylde line of Worths in Tiverton and you've just uncovered the beginnings of that which is great and his name is corrected as something that sounds more normal as Bamfylde.

I'm still looking for the William Worth birth record, who married Mary Symonds in 1744 because, unless I'm missing it which is perfectly possible, he's our direct descendant. He obviously wasn't descended from this John but he might have been a son of Edward born in 1678 but maybe that's a stretch. Odd he's not showing up with a christening.

If you have any luck with that particular one it would be awesome. Thanks again. Vivien

Are we assuming this is the same Bamfylde who was christened in Tiverton and had all those brothers and sisters + the twins and then was married in Washfield to Anna? By the way the John Worth and Elizabeth Furrse marriage record you just sent over, did that take place in Washfield or Tiverton?

I looked at the Worths of Washfield on the census from 1841 onwards and those Worths are landowners and wealthy and so I googled the family history too and it's much the same.

The story was passed down by my (Worth) family from Tiverton that they were connected or related to the Washfield Worths and "the family owned land." This is why I'm trying to work out what the connection was. Hence wondering where my William was christened. Bamfylde might have been his uncle?

Thank you for looking. Isn't that strange there's no trace of him. Any theories?

Also thanks for the latter day saint tip.

I think you may be right- he used his second name. Maybe too many John's in the family or he was the John born in 1708 who was Bamfylde's brother. Mind you that would have made him 37 when he married in 1745.

I found a John Worth born in 1720 who obviously isn't Banfylde's brother but he was born in Tiverton and was son of John.

Thanks again!

Thanks for hanging in there with me. Another thought.

Maybe he was an orphan, possibly some kind of relative who's parents died so he was christened with a different last name but had the first name of William. When they adopted him and brought him into the household they changed his last name to theirs?

Also when you pulled up that family that contained Reginald and Bridget and Bamfylde was that from Washfield?

Your other idea from yesterday that he used his middle name might explain it too.

Sorry, do you mean a Worth of Tiverton of Washfield for Reginald and Bamfylde or are you saying they are all blended together in the record you're looking at for Tiverton and Washfield. When I looked up the Parish Records for just Tiverton under family search I didn't see the Bridget and Reginald group which is why I figured they had to be Washfield.

There are indeed some things of interest including a picture of Worth House, a history of the Worths. Now I understand Worth is Washfield and that's where the church is. Still a tiny village with 400+ people. Now going to read what I've printed out. Also a page on who was christened in the Parish Church and reference to Bamfylde in a will as a brother in law. Great stuff!

Many thanks....

The Tiverton Museum research Library has a lot of information on the Worth family.
Try contacting them at: Email: research[at][/blue]tivertonmuseum.org.uk (replace [at] with @)
They also have a family tree.

Hello,

These are pictures I took of Washfield Church (Used to be called an Abbey)  Took a few pictures of the Gate of Worth House too, but you cant see the house from the road.

The pictures are mine and the link is to a Gallery I built, I own the copyright so no laws are broken in opening the link.  The show the crypt's in the Church as well as the Coat of Arms in the stain glass windows.

Peter, thank you for your kindness in sending me those wonderful Worth family related photos. I'm absolutely thrilled to have them especially since I'm trying to do this research from a distance. I found the will for a Henry Worth from 1680 on line by googling Worths of Washfield and it's interesting to see how differently his children are treated based on birth order.

Corrie, I heard back from the Tiverton Museum from research[at]tivertonmuseum.org.uk and my friend can make an appointment to go in and view what they have there on the couple of afternoons when they provide that service to people so again thanks for the suggestion.
