I am trying to trace my husbands family. His mother was a Campbell before marriage. Her father was an ordnance surveyor. Archibald Angus, born 1874. His father was Neil Campbell, born in Ardrishaig, Argyllshire in 1848. (married to Annie Carmichael, I think) also in ordnance surveying. They had eight children, born in various places in England and eventually living in Derby. It's Neil's parents and siblings that I am trying to prove. His father could be Angus Campbell, born 1807, a tailor by trade, married to Isabella Buchanan. I hope this information will help to confirm my findings. Many thanks. Nettiec.

Hi Nettiec.
This looks to be the marriage I think, from IGI:
Neil CAMPBELL and Annie CARMICHEAL married on 31 March 1869 in Tradeston, Glasgow
The original image for the marriage certificate will be available to view on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (costs are reasonable). Scottish marriage certs include full details on parents' names for bride and groom, including mothers' full names.

I have edited this post as there looks to be two couples with the same name having children at a similar time, which never helps!
Have you found a marriage cert for the Neil and Ann you are looking for? The couple who I mentioned in the the first post with a marriage in Tradeston in 1869 are I think in Glasgow for 1881 whilst the couple you are looking at are by now in Derby.

Nettiec, it would be good to confirm Annie, Neil's wife's. maiden name through one of their children's birth certs. I do not think her maiden name was Carmichael as this is the marriage I posted in Tradeston in 1869 for the couple who remain in Glasgow and went on to have their children there.

With the children being born in England could that be where the marriage took place?

I am not seeing any Scottish marriage like you (except for the Carmichael entry in 1869).

Many thanks for all the replies I received regarding the Campbell family. Some of the information I already had but have taken note of the others. I shall continue my search................

The IGI has a baptism of Archibald Angus Campbell, father Neil, mother Annie, in Whitewell, Derbyshire on 30 December 1873. This matches a birth in Runcorn in the September quarter of 1873, reference Runcorn 1873/Sep Qr/8a/221.
You need to get that birth certificate to get Annie's maiden surname. Then you will be in a better position to look for the marriage of Annie and Neil, which will confirm at least the name of Neil's father.
In 1881 they are in Derby, Neil and Annie both aged 33 and born in Scotland, and eldest child Neil aged 9, born in Chester. This matches a birth in Chester 1871/Dec Qr/8a/350.
There is no marriage of a N*l Campbell to an Ann* in FreeBMD before 1871.

"I am not seeing any Scottish marriage like you (except for the Carmichael entry in 1869)."
Interestingly enough, there are two entries, with Annie's surname as "Carmichael" and/or "Carmicheal" on "exact surname spelling."

Hi Malky :)
The 1869 Tradeston marriage mentioned does have bride's surname indexed as Carmicheal. Have you found another marriage, not this one?

Scotland's People is giving me 2 entries for the 1869 Tradeston entry. Each with different spellings.
Both individually under "Surnames that begin with" and checked against "Exact surname".

Interesting. Do they both have the same reference number? If so, my guess is that someone at SP has spotted the unusual spelling in the original, and has added an extra listing with the more conventional spelling.
If they have different reference numbers, then there must have been two couples, one with a relatively uncommon given name and a common surname and one with a relatively uncommon surname and a common given name, marrying in the same district in the same year.

Hello, I am new to this site and have only just seen this thread. I know that this is an old conversation but I am hoping that someone will see this:-) Hawk Moth, I have seen the photo of the grave. It is my Great Grandparents' grave and I have been desperate to find out more information about this side of my family for some time now. My Nana was Dorothy Cope Nee Campbell who was one of the daughters of AA Campbell and Beatrice Lucy. If anyone has any further details that they would be happy to share, then I would love to see them. Thank you
