Title: The Dragoonis family
Post by: annpmd on Thursday 03 November 11 19:06 GMT (UK)
Did anyone know of the Dragoonis family from Glasgow?

I don't know if it was originally a Scottish name or where my family originated from.

Can't seem to  find any family history.

Thanks

Ann

Hi Ann

Can we take it a stage at a time perhaps? What info do you have on your Dragoonis family that you have been able to confirm to date?

Monica  :)

My husband was George Dragoonis, since deceased, who came to Birmingham but his brothers Billy and Richard lived in Mayfield Road, Glasgow.  Richard came to England and married, since deceased,  but Billy stayed in Glasgow until he died. The parents were Sarah and William Dragoonis but we don't know how or when William came to Scotland,  the family tree is a mystery.  We do think that they may have originated from Lithuania but don't know much more.

As some of the replies state Russian this could be a link.

Thanks

Ann

The marriage is on Scotlandspeople but it can't be viewed online. If you order it you will get their parents names

1937 DRAGOONIS WILLIAM and CALLISON SARAH DOWIE at HAMILTON /LANARK

There still seems to be a family member living in Hamilton

I married into the Dragoonis family in East Kilbride. I married (*) Dragoonis. They, too, can't seem to find much about their family history but believe the name originates from Lithuania.

Added: Details of potentially living people removed to protect their identity as is part of RootsChat's policy. Thank you.

When I saw the name my initial reaction was Lithuanian. When I read they might have lived in Bellshill I was even more inclined to think they where Lithuanian.

A cousin of mine married a Joe Dragoonis (b 1924)  and I have some of his tree. His father Juozas (Joe) was from Poland (b 1900). He Married Pauline Smith in Glasgow in 1922. The Dragoonis family appears to have lived in Blantyre (Scottish census  1911) and the children all seem to have been born in Poland. Juozas's parents Adam and Eve (Sledzious?) lived in Hamilton wher he died in 1953. I hope this gives you something to go on.

From that 1911 information it looks like Adam was married twice and a few children were born in Scotland from 1908 onwards

Hi Sancti, Why do think he was married twice?  I wasn't too sure either as the 1921 census has his wife listed as Eve.  Thanks

@EKAnnie if Adam is the Adam who passed in 1953, his death certificate should show the names of his wives

PS there is also a Scottish Lithuanian Social Club in Bellshill, perhaps they can help with family research?
