I learned from other relatives that my Dad's cousin Roland Teasdale born in 1899 was killed in France in 1916 but I have been unable to find any record of him. His elder brother Frederick William Teasdale was also killed in France 24 Jul 1917 aged 19 . I have found his details.
Can anyone help me trace Roland who was my Dad's namesake.

Hi When you say you haven't found any record of him, do you have any other details about Roland to help us out e.g. was he in the Army or another service ( you imply army but its best to ask), whereabouts in the country was he born, have you found him on any censuses. Sometimes we need more questions before we get to the answers :) and all information is helpful thanks.
-
Roland was born in North Shields in the 4th qtr of 1899. I am not sure which service he was in - another cousin told me he was killed in France in 1916 so I asssumed perhaps wrongly that he was in the army.
I should have looked at the photo I have of him in uniform which is I think a naval uniform. The cap badge has laurel leaves with an anchor in the middle surmounted by a crown. He is wearing what looks rather like a reefer jacket with a leather strap from the lapel into the breast pocket.
I have a copy of a postcard with Italian writing that we thought had been sent by my Dad's brother who was killed in France in 1918 but if Roland Teasdale was in the navy perhaps it was from him although there is no message on it from the sender.
I don't have a lot of information about him alas.

thanks for that - it gives more ideas to search for him :)

Thanks Leanne for the link to the previous thread which I had not seen before. Irene - Might be helpful for the photo on that thread to be posted on to the Armed Forces World War one section and head it 'Uniform recognition please'. They are very helpful and it may be that the previous post was not spotted by a relevant expert on such uniforms. He must have been very young when he enlisted though.

Having googled the cap badge, is it possibly a Merchant navy badge?
-
There is a record on FindMyPast Merchant Navy records for a J R Teasdale born 1899 Northumberland. I don't have a sub to them but perhaps someone who has might be able to rule him in or out for you?

Hi Ad,y do you think it could be a merchant navy cap badge and uniform?
-
His parents from the latest census are Frederick W and Mary (E) so don't think the RFA would be correct
-
The casualty that Margp has found is in India (Kirkee) hes not on Soldiers Died In Great War
It could be Merchant Navy or Royal Naval Reserve or RNVR
If he was born 1899 he would just scrape into active service age unless he lied.

Hi
I should pay more attention and read past threads
I have found this record

Address 45 something Gardens North Shields
I think that's Onslow Gardens, but it goes with the next person down on the list.
Roland's address on the passenger list is 19 Whitby Street, North Shields.
Which is where he and his parents were living in 1901.

Thank you, so Roland did not die in WW1 he went to the USA?
-
Well that confirms he wasnt a casualty of WW1 :)
Ady

Thank you all so much.
I must tell my cousin she was wrong about Roland having been killed in WW1.
She will be delighted that we have found more information about him.
I will try to trace him in USA.

Hi Irene,
you can search and see his details on Ellis Island site http://www.ellisisland.org/
It is a free site.
He is a crew member on a Belgian ship so more information to find out ;)

Hi Irene
I think that Roland may have died and he was a Seaman, I have looked at other pages on the emigration records
and under the heading on page 2
Seamen Left In Hospital
Roland Teasdale aged 19 on the 14th Dec 1918 Cardiff died, it does say what he died of but I can't make it out, it looks a bit like pneumonia???
Margp
-
It's very strange, Margp - when I have searched again, I got to a completely different page ???
This one now says he was a 3rd officer - 28 January 1919 - pg 0905
The previous one was pg 0903
(Still haven't found where he was in hospital though)
-
Mind you he can't have died in Cardiff if he arrived in NY a month later.

What records are you searching on, I am searching on the New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957

I don't think it says he died in Cardiff - I think that's where he signed on. The heading of the relevant column is 'When and where signed on'.
The next column is 'Sickness' and like Margp I think it says 'Pneumonia (died)'.
-
Ellis Island - I was directed to different manifesto sheets each time which was just unusual.
0903 is the American Consular service, Cardiff sheet 13th December 1918
0905 is the Aliens employed as Crew members January 1919 - from the port of Fowey which is presumably where they left from.
-
Here is an extract of the record
Sorry it will not upload
-
The crew list his name is on is dated 13th December 1918 and is the one submitted to the American Consulate in Cardiff - presumably before they set sail for the USA.
-
I interpret the record Margp found as reading that he died in hospital in New York.
On the New York Immigration page of the record it says the Sierra Morena arrived on 28th January 1919 with a crew of 28 - of which 6 deserted, one was discharged and one was left in hospital (and subsequently died - Roland).
This would reduce the crew to 20; the record then shows that 10 more were signed on in New York making the crew up to 30, ready for the next journey to Gibraltar in the beginning of April.
So it looks like poor old Roland only just made it to the USA :(
-
I think that 3rd Officer would fit with the photo of him in the MN he hasnt any medal entitlement as war had ended

How very sad is this - thinking it was all over and then this to happen. His poor family.

There’s an obituary notice in the New York Times, February 8, 1919.

Thank you all so very much for all your work.
I now have a clearer picture .
Roland's elder brother Frederick William was killed in France on 24 Jul 1917.
Roland died aged 19 of pneumonia
His cousin Jane Ann Broome, my father's sister died in Jun 1918 we think perhaps of influenza and was buried in her wedding dress.
Jane Ann's brother Charles Henry was killed in France 28 Jul 1918
Another of her brothers Thomas Edward Broome died of a lung complaint aged 42
My father Roland Broome died also of a lung complaint aged 50
Quite a tragic story
-
Hi Irene
I have sent the records, let me know if you have got them.
