Astonishing what you can find online. I knew my mum's family had run shops in Durham which are now the sweet shop and Waterstone's on Saddler Street (http://g.co/maps/95yaj).
But I just found the conveyancing details online as well - they bought No.68 for £1475 in 1878 + £25 for fixtures and fittings:

When the Earl's owned it was a fruiterer, confectioner + tobacconist.
