Title: Murray/Stenhouse
Post by: Mell100 on Tuesday 01 November 11 08:15 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the birth of Margaret Murray, b.abt 1827. She married James Stenhouse in 1858, in Edinburgh. He was from Haddington, East Lothian, so I am assuming that Edinburgh was the bride's parish.

Am I right in assuming this? She died in New Zealand, and I haven't been able to find out who her parents are. So, is there any way of finding out more about her with such a little amount of information.

Thanks

Hello marriage entry got - shall post a cut of both parents names for a bit of deciphering . - 5 mins   :O)

I make parents of James (aged 22) - Robert Stonehouse (labourer) and Margaret Stenhouse - Maiden Name - Morrison.

Margarets (aged 28) parents are more difficult..  William Murray - Spirit Dealer - deceased and Janet Murray - Maiden name - Ba??ll....

Over to all for an interpretation.  Maybe someone can find them on the ? '41 census - I'm assuming that Margaret was working on her own account by the'51.....

Regards,   Steve

(Mell100 - if you pm me with your e-mail address - I can send you the marriage entry)

Thanks so much. I can make out some of it (I know his parents' names) and her's seem to be William and Janet.  Her mothers maiden name is proving a bit more difficult

I found Margaret's birth and her mother is listed as Janet Douall. The births of her siblings have the same maiden name, with spelling variations like Dowell.

Went back onto the official govt website at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  hada look for Jane/et Marray - other name Ba**** deaths in all of Scotland from 1855 to 1920.  There are 27 and none look remotely like it - especially if the mothers maiden name ends in ll.  Shall send you the list now.

Do you want me to get the mothers death entry - if I can find it - assuming she died in Scotland? :)

If you don't mind. I think the marriage entry might be wrong, because when I looked for births, the only one I could find that was similar has the mother as Margaret Douall/Dowell.

Hello Mel - the marriage entry is correct as in all of Scotland 1855 to 2009 there are only 5 Stenhouse Murray marriages and the '1858 one is the only one remotely like it.    I'll post you the list of Janet Murray deaths I mentioned earlier - FYI have just forwarded the marriage entry.   :)

Sorry, I meant that they may have recorded it wrong. It's definitely the right marriage record, because everything else lines up.

Well Mel

Seems that Janet gave birth to Margaret when she was 45....  The only Janet Murray death - with another name beginning with D and ending in ll is that of a Janet Murray a 90 year old lady dying of old age - widow of William Murray - 'Spirit Dealer' - 14th May 1875.    Her surname is given as Doull.  Witness was a son W Murray.

Her parents were James Doull a weaver and Isobel Doull - Maiden Surname 'Doull'.  With this entry, the flourishes on the capital 'D' make it roughly look like a 'B'   :)

Copy will be with you in 5 mins.  Regards,   Steve

Hi Mel100 and Steve,

Trying to save your credits, her christening is on IGI, Janet Doull christened 9th Jan 1785 at Wick, Caithness, Scotland. This is an extracted record.

She had 2 siblings, George christened 1778 and Margaret christened 29 Jun 1781, both at Wick.

There is 2 entries for James Doull and Isobel Doull, 1 at Wick dated 17 Jun 1777 and the other at Canisbay on 12 Jul 1777, both their parishes calling the banns. Both records are extracted.

Hi,

On FreeReg, Janet's christening on 09 Feb 1785 (not Jan as on IGI) shows parents residence as Keiss and witness was a James George.

The marriage of James and Isobel Doul (sic) is also on FreeReg, James parish was Wick and Isobel was Brabster, although took place in Canisbay.

Hi Mell100,

The James Stenhouse you mentioned were his parents Robert Stenhouse and Agnes Chosewood ? I have a James born around 1837 at Inveresk Musselburgh, Robert was born 1790 at Gifford Haddington and he owned West Windygoul Farm Haddingtonshire, if so you are from the same line as my wife her mother was a Stenhouse

Cheers.

Archie.

Hi Archie

Thanks for asking, but James' parents were Robert Stenhouse and Margaret Morrison. Robert was born about 1800 in Bolton, East Lothian.

Thanks
Mell

Hi Kris

They are the family I was looking for. I knew about the marriage, but I didn't know what happened to Margaret. William and Janet had a son named James, so it's quite possible that this was him informing on her death

Thanks
Mell

Hello,
My Name is Natalie and I live in New Zealand. I've been doing an internet search on James & Margaret(nee Murray) Stenhouse and I came across your posting.
Margaret and James came to New Zealand on the "Strathfieldsaye"  which sailed 25 Jan 1858 from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. They arrived on  29 Apr 1858 "Strathfieldsaye", Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.  I will try to attached some documents for you.  They were one of my sets of my great great grandparents on my mothers side.  They had 4 children, three boys Robert, William and James Junior and a girl (Jessie who died aged 3 months.  In the 1882 Return of NZ Freeholders of Land he is listed as have land worth 160 pounds in St Kilda, which is a suburb of Dunedin.  He was listed with an occupation of Inspector. This is a very nice suburb of Dunedin and very close to the sea. He also stood for the St Kilda Borough Council and was elected in 1888. He was the mayor of St Kilda for some time. For some reason in late 1800's the family packed up and went to Australia.  James junior stayed behind and he was a well known hotel proprietor on the West Coast and Otago.  I have some other information and photo's of james and Margaret which I can hunt down if you are interested.  Regards,

Hello Mell,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Are you researching the Stenhouse line or the Murray line?  regards, Natalie

Hello
I have attached photo's of James Stenhouse and Margaret Murray.  Also a copy of Margaret Stenhouse (nee Murray) birth certificate showing her birth as 1823 to William Murray and Janet Douall.
Their marriage document of 1858 shows James as 22 years old and Margaret as 28 years.  This is obviously not correct as Margaret would actually have been 34/35 years old.  Obviously she was quite a bit older than James.  This seems to be reflected in her death certificate which I have just received which shows her dying in Marrackville, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1921 aged 95.  James died in 1927 aged 87 so this confirms the age difference.
Their marriage document shows William as being deceased.  Does anyone know when he died?  Or where he was born or married.  I have been unable to find William and Janet's marriage at all.
Margaret and James are my 3 x Great Great Grandparents.

Hello again,
Sorry, the birth entry for Margaret Stenhouse nee Murray had to be reduced in size so I have cropped to just her entry for September 1823.
