Title: BROADCLYST baptism look-up 1856
Post by: rogden on Monday 31 October 11 15:13 GMT (UK)
I am trying to confirm the birth/baptism of GEORGE POPE at Broadclyst, Devon about 1856. His parents were JOHN POPE and ANN.
There was more than one birth for George POPE registered at Exeter in 1856 and any information about a Broadclyst baptism, especially the date, would help me enormously to identify the correct George Pope.

Thank you
You have identified relevant census details but I already know about his subsequent life. It is his birth/baptism in particular I wish to find to confirm his parentage.

Hi Roger
Found this Birth  Sept 1855  Pope George = St Thomas
 5b 46.
On digging further found that St Thomas is / was a subdistrict of Broadcylst until 1931 when they lost the parish of Broadcylst to Devon Central where the records are now kept.
Could this be "your " George   at least there`s a cert number
Regards

Thanks Dragongirl
The birth you found could well be the George POPE I'm looking for. The birth in the 3rd quarter of 1855 fits as does St Thomas being a sub-district of Broadclyst. The valuable info you supplied will narrow my search - hopefully to one - which will save me donating too much to the GRO.
You have been most helpful.
Roger

Just to be pedantic - Broad Clyst was a sub-district of St Thomas - see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/st%20thomas.html
