I don't need a look up as I have full access you an answer to my question. If the person was a seaman were they recorded and if so do they appear in a separate part of the index. I know the man was a seaman as this was put on his marriage cert in 1906. His wife is at home wife two children. They went on to have two more so I know he is still alive when the census was taken. So I assume he was at sea. Were seamen included?
Thanks in advance

Royal Navy - yes
Merchant seaman - if they were docked in a British port on census night - yes
If at sea - no
This was the same in all previous census years

That is not correct for vessels in the Home Trade. British Ships in the coasting or home trade which arrived in port within a certain period, or British ships in the foreign trade which were in port on census night, were issued with ships' schedules. On the 1911 Schedule for Vessels the instructions were if the vessel was on voyage at midnight on April 2nd to describe the place of mooring on arrival in port. When the vessel arrived in port the census schedule was handed to a Customs Officer. In the 1901 census this applied to all British and foreign vessels engaged in the UK coasting trade which arrived in port from the 1st April to the 30th June, and I assume was the same in 1911.

I think the records of sea men are kept at Kew, in the archives there... I've been trying to find on line records of sea men myself, but no luck :(. Apparently, some sailors were not even recorded if they worked on a ship, because they were hired for the job at hand. However, someone told me that, so it might be incorrect... I'd love to know if anyone had found a place to look for this kind of record online :).

Records of Merchant Navy Seamen 1918-1941 are on FindMyPast.
If he was still at sea in 1918 you should find him there.

If you mean for the Census, then that is not correct. See my previous post.

Hihihi I wish I had the contact details of the person who told me that, you could have debated with them. I don't know if you, or they are right. I was just saying what I was told, hence I said it may be in correct.
However, as for census generally, I know, for my own research, that they are perhaps not often, but sometimes incorrect.
