Apparently on this census page William Dighton/ Deighton and Richalda Dighton/ deighton are listed along with other romanies including the Harris, Hughes and James families who are all hawkers.
I would be especially interested in the Harris family data and would really appreciate it if some kind person would look this up for me. Thanks.

I think that David is probably born Chiddingly. Misheard and written as Chitanlye. Chailey is north of Lewes. Not sure about Hoffam - thought it would be Horsham at first but the earlier mention of that is quite clear. Houghton maybe?
Have you found them in a later census to check aginst that?

Might Hoffam be Offham (just outside Lewes, in Hamsey parish, but with its own Victorian church)?

Quite likely, I should think, I reckon, but am not sure, that these Harrises are part of OH's family...they are rather elusive!

John Harris, born in Ringmer c.1858 according to the 1871 census, does not appear in the register of baptisms here. Perhaps this is not surprising.

LOL - probably not and the names often change. Ellas seems to be Elias or Elijah! Thanks for all the info.

hi my great grandfather was Saunders Dighton and was married to Rose Hilton (we think) in 1892 in Steyning Sussex in the quarter of Apr-May-Jun i believe this is the right information for my great grandfather even though on the 1911 census he comes up as Sanders Diton or Saunders Diton he also was known as an Hawker/Pedlar as you well know spellings vary due to not knowing how to read and write amongst the Romany Gypsies.
