Henri John Hart, the son of John Hart was born in New York. His daughter Elvina,
born in New York in 1822 migrated to Australia where she married Moses Rintel,
the first Reverend of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in 1849. She is my
great great grandmother. Moses was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1823, the son
of Meir/Meyer Rintel the reverend of the Edinburgh Congregation. I am told that they
came from Bremen in Germany. If anyone researching the American Harts is
interested in this or if anyone can make a connection between the Scottish and
American Rintels i would like to hear from them. I might have much to tell them.

Elvina Hart and Moses Rintel were my great great grandparents. I was told that Myer Rintel had Polish origins. I am interested in finding out more about my paternal grandmother's family.

Welcome to Rootschat. If you are decended from Moses and Elvina you must come through Walter Rintel. Of all
their 8 children he was the only one to have grandchildren. Moses was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1823. His father
Myer /Meir was a Hebrew author and Talmudic scholar. He was connected to the Great Synagogue of London in Duke
St under the tutelege of Rabbi Herschell. The 1841 cencus shows him as being 56 years old. In 1817 he moved to Edinburgh
where he was the minister of the Edinburgh Synagogue. In the 1841 census his wife was Mary 44, and three other
children, Joseph 31who was the Rabbi at Falmouth cornwall from 1832 to 1849. The other two children with him in 1841
were Floretta 15 and Hyma 11. Moses was the reader at the Brighton Synagogue . He came to Sydney where he began the
first Jewish school in Australia. He moved to Melbourne where he was the first rabbi of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation.
It was there in 1849 that he married Elvina . She was born in New York in 1822, the daughter of John Hart, a veteren of the Royal Navy in the Napoleanic wars and Isabella Levy a member of an old American Jewish family. Moses died in 1880.
Elvina lived on till 1904 when she died at her home in Drummond St Carlton Melbourne Victoris in 1904. I was lucky
enough to be given 105 pages of the Hart family tree. i can also give you website addresses which will show you just
how important a figure Moses and Elvinas father and uncles were in the the history of Judaisim in Australia.

When i recieved your first reply i thought that of all the 8 children of Moses and Elvina only Walter left a continuing
family line. Further research on the Trove newspaper site showed that his brother Simeon did also. He married Bertha
Waterman (1861-26/6/1927) in Melbourne on 17/2/1886. Their daughter Grace was born in Melbourne in 1887. They
moved to western Australia. Grace married Major John(Jock)Campbell, born at Edinburgh Castle Scotland on 24/6/1876,
in Perth on 23/3/1911. Their daughter Bertie married John Hogan of Boulder WA on 25/8/1937. I found a lot of this
information on the Trove newspaper site. Sometimes it takes some finding but the results can be rewarding. As to where
Myer was born , this has not been proven. One scource has Myer being born in Hamburg , Germany. His age as given
on the 1841 UK census is 56, which would make his birth year 1785. What is interesting is the report of the death of his
wife Sarah as reported in the Argus in Melbourne on 8/7/1869. The report descrbes her as ''the mother of Rabbi Moses Rintel"
and says she died at Rogasen prussia on 4/5/1869. She was 85, which would make birth year 1784. Research into the
complex history of the area shows that in 1784/1785, Rogasen,Prussia, was Rogozno , Poland. That fact that the both names
applied to the same area at different times would account for the two versions. I have 105 pages of the Hart family tree with
the Rintel line included. So is Walter or Simeon your direct ancestor ?

You asked about some Rintels farming in WA. I am not aware of any at Kellerberrin, but there certainly were Rintels
farming near Wickipen This was a religious settlement called New Jerusalem. It had its origins in Melbourne with James
Cowley Fisher, the "Nunnawading Messiah". Hyam Rintel ,who appears on a WA family tree as the brother of Moses
was a devotee of the 'Messiah". This caused a rift between them that was never healed. They lived in the same street
in Melbourne but there was no contact between them.Hyam married Jessie Ann Kefford , the sister in law of the Messiah
Their daughter Deborah married John William Schultz. He must have been another of the Messiahs followers as they moved
to Wickipin. These are their children
Emil Emmanuel Schultz b 1897 Scoresby Vic M. Vera Mackenzie in Perth 1925 D Sth. melbourne 1946
James Frederick Will Schultz b 1903 Narrogin WA m Alice Symes in Perth 1927
Keiza Rachel Rintel Schultz b 1903 Narrogin WA m. Harold Giles in Narrogin 1931 d 1988 Armidale WA
DEborah died in Perth in 1925 . Her husband died in 1925 at Narrogin

I dont know how much you know of your Elvinas family but it is a fascinating story. As far back as i can go there
was Lazarus/Leizer/Lizer Hart(1743-1800) and Rachel (1752-17/9/1818) They lived in Rosemary Lane ,now known as
Royal Mint Rd in the east end of London. I am descended through their daughter Elizabeth, and you would come down
through her brother John. Elizabeth died in Rosemary Lane in 1848. John served in the Royal Navy during the Noaploanic
wars and is thought to have been on HMS Defiance at the battle of Trafalgar. After the war he went to America . There
he married Isabella Levy in New York. This was Elvinas mother. She died in 1830 and he married his cousin Miriam (louisa)
Hart on 3/7/1833. Miriam died in Melbourne on 19/2/1849, and John on 23/1/1864, also in Melbourne.
These are Johns children with Isabella
Henri John Hart b 7/5/1820 in New York d 29/4/1884 Melbourne
Elvina Hart b 22/10/1822 New York d21/5/1904 Melbourne
Isabella Hart b2/1/1827 New York d 17/5/1910 Merlbourne
Louisa Hart b 28/11/1829 New York D 19/12/1909 Melbourne
Johns children with Miriam
Hyam Hart B25/6/1835 New York D 26/9/1876 Melbourne
Lawrence Hart 4/5/1837 New York
Asher Hart 4/51839 London UK
Rebecca Hart b 17/4/1841London d 22/6/1871 London
Elizabeth Hart 26/4/1845 26/4/1845 D 1897 Victoria Australia
References to most of them can be found on the Trove newspaper site.
That is simply the beginning of the story.

Peter,
I must have confused Wickipen with Kellerberrin somehow.
Interesting to learn more about the Harts. I must make some further entries in my family tree. I was aware of Isabella Levy but now have more details. There were some British naval officers among my mother's Walwyn-Shepheard forebears.

Rmod,
A little on Moses Rintel. He saied from London on the 402 ton barque Liyods on 15/3/1844, via Plymouth which he left
on 28/3/1844, arriving in Sydney on 14/7/1844. This is from The Australian (Sydney) of 15/7/1844. He left Sydney on the
138 ton schooner Velocity on 19/3/1849, arriving on 27/3/1849. Five months later he married Elvina. that was either a fast
romance or maybe he already knew John Hart and his family. What was your grandfathers name? I may have him already
in the Hart /Rintel family history. If you think the small sample of the Hart history is interesting, wait till you see the rest of it.
regards
Peter
