Title: John SINGLETON accident in Ditton
Post by: CerocChick on Friday 28 October 11 12:17 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone

I'm hoping someone out there can help me.  My Nan used to say that one of our relatives was killed at work in a chemical accident at work in Ditton.  I am trying to confirm or otherwise this by trying to find a newspaper article or inquest details but I dont know where to start.

The details I have are as follows:

John SINGLETON b. 1876 in Bold married Julia DONOVAN In 1896 in Runcorn, they had a little girl Maude in 1897.

In 1901 they were living in Widnes and he was a chemical labourer.

He died 16 Aug 1901.

Any help would be great

Regards

As no-ones replied to this post, I thought I'd give it a go.

The death of a 25 year old John Singleton was registered in the Prescot district (which covers Widnes) in the Dec Q of 1901, at least 6 weeks after he died, assuming your date of death is correct.  This would suggest there was "an issue" over his death and may well have been because an inquest was held.  It may be worth your while buying the death cert, which will give you details of how he died and where and it will indicate if there was an inquest . Then you could contact the local record office to ask if they would look in the newspapers around the time of his death to see if there was a report of what happened.  You may have to pay for their research unless you could visit and look for yourself.

According to records I have,I have a John Singleton, died 16th August 1901,buried 21 August 1901 in Widnes Cemetery. aged 25 years, this age agrees with yours. If you send me your email address by pm I will send you a copy of the sheet,it has also some other Singletons on it who all resided in the same street, in fact next door but one .

Regarding newspaper coverage, Widnes Library hold on film copies of the Widnes Weekly News, you might find a reference to  your relatives accident, keep in mind that at that time there were a great deal of accidents in the Widnes area so the report might only be a few lines.

Thank you Alpinecottage and Jangeo for the time taken to reply to my post.

I have sent for the death cert, so hopefully that will shed some more light on the accident.

Jangeo - i've sent a PM with email address for your kind offer.
