Title: De-ciphering 1901 census job
Post by: corisande on Thursday 27 October 11 13:58 BST (UK)
I have no idea what this is, it looks like "L D Board"

I comes from the 1901 census for a man in Mayo, but I suspect that the employment is pan-Ireland rather than Mayo

Thanks Shane

This is the census entry on this link   (http://www.cairogang.com/other-people/british/castle-intelligence/kelly/kelly.html) - it is in Knock, but my feeling is that it is not just local there

I think I will settle for "C D Board" and do some research on that"

Not sure if this will help,it still just refers to initials but might give a clue as to what the
the  c.d board did, also further down the page there are a few names mentioned.

While it is difficult to be certain which board he worked for, the IRA have him down as a Water Bailiff in Kerry in 1921. I will see if there is any connection between that and either board

This is highly likely as : Congested Districts Board.
Set up in Ireland in 1891 by Chief Secretary,Arthur Balfour to alleviate poverty & congested living conditions in West of Ireland

Thank you very much mmcpadden1947

There is a write up on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congested_Districts_Board_for_Ireland

The CDB was part of the Conservative policy of 'Constructive Unionism' or 'killing Home Rule with kindness'.[3] The purpose of the CDB was to alleviate poverty by paying for public works, such as building piers for small ports on the west coast, to assist fishing, modernising farming methods or sponsoring local factories to give employment and stop emigration from Ireland. Regions under the Board's authority were areas where the rateable valuation was less than 30 shillings. The entire area which was so categorised came to 3,500,000 acres (14,000 km2) in 1901 with a population of 500,000.

I must say that it is something that I had not come across before.

Kelly senior enlisted, twice, and was discharged twice in weeks, in British Army in 1915. He was 52 but lied to get in saying he was 45. He gave his Profession then as "Clerk of Works", which I would think has with the Congested Districts Board, as they appear to have been involved in construction work

I got side-tracked and have notes on Kelly senior  on this link - click  (http://www.cairogang.com/other-people/british/castle-intelligence/kelly/charles-luke-father/luke-kelly.html)
