Please, has anybody got access to or can direct towards the parish records for Sandwich pre-1820. I am interested in finding the birth details and parentage of my 4g grandmother Mary Thelvey (or more likely Shelvey) who was apparently born in Sandwich c.1798. She married John Gurr at St Lawrence in 1820.
Help! :)

Ann SHELVEY baptised 6th April 1794 at Sutton-by-Dover, parents John and Sarah.
It's the nearest match that I can see.

Hi bearkat,
Thanks for your help, but I don't think that the baptism records for St Peters or St Celements are online yet. I was wondering whether somebody had a CD or fiche of the records that they could look her up on?
If not, I'm hoping they have one at Maidstone, unless there's anywhere you can suggest?
:)

Canterbury archives have the parish records for Sandwich. Depending on whether you are local the library at Dover or Sandwich may have copies as well

Here's a link to the only transcription of Sandwich records (Banns) that I can think of

Hi everybody,
I guess I'll have to get in the car and have a day out. What a shame!
(By the way I'm aware that Canterbury Cathedral Archives AND the Beaney Museum are both shut for upgrading)
Thank you both for your help.
:)

Canterbury archives are not closing untill the end of January. They are busy but you should be able to ring and book a space. You need a CARN card to view their records.
Enjoy your day out

That will save me some time.

Hi Greentrad,
I will have a look for you tomorrow and write tomorrow night - I have all Sandwich transcribed but it is on my other computer.
Sincerely,
Susan

Hi Susan,
That will be a great help.
Thank you very much,
:)

Hi,
I've now checked my Sandwich transcripts and I'm sad to say that there is no Shelvy or Thelvy family at Sandwich (any of the 3 parishes) beyond the early 1730s. So, no luck on your Mary circa 1798. :(
There was an army family named McTurley circa 1792-1796 and an Elvery family circa 1802-1805 but no Shelvy, Thelvy or other variants.
At least you now know where she wasn't baptised!
Good luck with your hunt.
Sincerely,
Susan

Thank you very much for checking.

Hello Greentrad,
Saw you request for Shelvey/Thelvey some time ago but did nothing as I don't have the records of Sandwich.
Susan has been kind enough to eliminate Sandwich so I had a look at Deal. The name is mopre likely to be Shelvey, I think as it's a local name. Sadly, no Shelvey's matching the name and date in Deal, Walmer, Sholden or Northborne.
I did come across a Shelley. Spelling was atrocious in those days and people very often got written down with different names - it all depended what the Curate heard.
There was a whole family of Shelley's in Deal with a Mary baptised on 23/12/1798 to David & Lydia.
That's as near as I can get to being any help
Regards
AJ

AJ,
Thanks very much for trying for me - I'll see if I can come up with something a bit closer. I hope that I'll find her in the end.
Cheers,
:)

Hello,
I know it is now some time since your last posting but I was wondering if you had moved on as I have a transcscription of the St Lawrence marriage and it says that Mary Shelvy was a widow! ??? It was also noted that John Gurr was a Widower.
Not sure if this helps, but if correct may at least give you a different brick wall to knock down.
Regards,
Tony
