Hi,
Can anybody help me read an entry in the baptism records of FELKIRK, Yorkshire for 1874 please. I've looked at it on ancestry and cannot make it all out.
February '74 JOSEPH DOBSON of Shafton was baptised, entry signed by Wm Knight, vicar.
The name of the father has been altered from SAMUEL to JOSEPH, and then there is another word below the word "Joseph" and before "& Mary" , please can someone help me puzzle it out. It's driving me potty.
Thank you!

Difficult isn't it? I'd say Chartley, Hartley, Chartby, Hartby, Chatby, Hatby - something along those lines I think!
Heather
p.s. I also searched the 1881 census for a family with a head named Joseph or Samuel, wife Mary and son Joseph born 1873 or 1874 without success.

Thanks both of you, I tried all of those - can't find anyone who fits though. And thanks for looking at the census too, Heather - I know where they were in '81 though, it's what went on before that that I'm trying to work out.
According to birth certs from the GRO, Mary Ann seems to have had one child by Samuel Dobson and 2 years later one by Joseph Dobson - that's why I'm so interested in this baptism. Samuel crossed out and Joseph written in. The child was registered on 16 FEB with father Samuel, then baptised on 22 FEB and father's down as Joseph. Very odd. And I've tried looking for brothers; tried deaths of a Samuel too - no luck.

I see the Ancestry transcibers have read Chartley as PRIESTLEY. Can't say I agree with that, but if it opens up another avenue of search for you ..
Good Luck!
