Title: Looking for someone who lives local to Odcombe
Post by: edalmun on Wednesday 26 October 11 13:00 BST (UK)
Hello,

I'm looking for someone who lives close to Odcombe who wouldn't mind popping into the church to have a look for something for me. I have been told there is a photograph of my great great grandfather William Samuel Drayton as a boy in the choir somewhere in the church. He was born in 1880, so presumably it was taken around 1890ish. I'm not certain if it is still there, but if some kind person wouldn't mind taking a look for me, and hopefully taking a photograph, or seeing if there is any mention of any other Draytons in the area, I would be very very grateful.

Kind regards,
Elissa

Hi Elissa

I don't actually live near Odcombe (in fact, I had to Google it!) but I am planning a trip to East Coker, which I see is only 8 miles from Odcombe.  I do live in Somerset, but it's a big county and Odcombe is nearly an hour away.

I probably won't get to East Coker until some time in January (or even February) but if nobody else has been able to help out by then, I'm happy to do so.  :)

I bet you thought I'd forgotten about this thread.

I'm afraid I don't have any news for you.  My husband and I went to Yeovil today so we called in at Odcombe on the way home - but sadly the church was locked.  :(    There is no contact information on 'A Church Near You' and the church doesn't seem to have a website.

I took a picture of the outside for you, but it's not the same, I know.

Thank you ever so much! I so grateful for you taking the time to look into this for me, I am constantly amazed by how nice 'family history people' can be! Thank you very much for the photo, I will add it to my records.

Thank you again,
Elissa

No problem.  :)

If I'm ever in that neck of the woods again I'll see if the church is open.  The porch was unlocked so we thought we'd be okay... but the inner door was locked.   Shame.
