Has anyone come across another name for Martha? I thought I'd ask as it was only a few years ago that I discovered that Harry and Henry were interchangeable. ::)
Thanks
Ewan

Do you mean Mary (as in the title) or Martha (as in your post)?

I have come across Mally - seems to exist as a name in its own right but may be perhaps a version of Martha?

Thank you everyone for your help with links and suggestions.
I have come to the conclusion that an ancestor with the name of Martha may have been named as just that on a marriage record, I did find a marriage record with the date and place as a good match but the bride's name was Mary so possible this is not the correct marriage.

Other diminutives for Martha are Pat and Patty. Caused my sister and I a lot of puzzling last winter while transcribing some family diaries from the 1850s and 1860s. The household had a daughter called Martha Jane, so we guessed who M.J was quite easily, but we racked our brains over who Pat could be. Then we got to these entries on successive days: "M.J went to market and fell down into Mr Bishop's cellar and hurt her leg" and "Poor Pat is at home all day her leg being very sore". Cracked it! Same person! Confirmed by checking a reference to Pat's birthday with M.J's birth date.

Hi, registered just to reply to this. I've just taken my mum, Martha (who everyone calls Pat) to place a wreath on my grandma's grave. My grandma's also called Martha. Her headstone actually reads "Martha (Pat) Hatton"
I've always just taken the fact that everyone, including my grandad, calls my mum Pat. Never questioned why. Googled it and it brought me to this forum.
So I guess I'd say that if there was an interchangeable name for Martha then Pat is definitely one.

my Aunt was called Polly - her real name was Jane but because one of her cousins was called Jane they 'changed' my aunts name to Polly to avoid confusion.

I've found two separate instances of Marthas being known as Pattie.

My book of names cites Mattie and Pattie as two of the earliest pet names for Martha.

I stumbled across this thread as I was looking for a connection between the names Martha and May. I’ve read that May was a common pet name for Mary and Margaret, but also possibly for Martha.
I have an ancestor who was called May Busby. I have her census and marriage records but have been struggling to pinpoint her birth (and older relatives) because I’m guessing she wasn’t born May.
Using her place and year of birth (Brixton 1865) and fathers name at marriage (Henry) I searched high and low for different name variants and the only one that made sense was born Martha.

Hi,
I came across a mention of a 'Jim and Pattie' who turned out to be 'Richard James (Jim) who married Martha Margaret (Pattie)'.

A Margaret confusingly always referred to as "Polly" caused me some issues when trying to find someone for a friend. I'd not realised it was used. apparently it's something to do with Margeurite - Pearl - Polly.
