Hi folks.
I'm wondering if anyone's got a trip to either Wolverhampton of Stafford History Centre on the cards, and might me able to check up the following for me?
I am trying to trace Benjamin Glover and Mary Spate, who came from the Bilston area, but later moved to the South Wales valleys. FreeBMD has the following marriage record:
Benjamin Glover, bachelor married Mary Spait, spinster on 19 May 1823, at Wolverhampton St Peter. Witnesses Joseph Duffell and Samuel Hansher.
The record also seems to indicate that there may be banns in existence for this marriage.
The certificate for Mary's second marriage in 1839 identifies her father as Joseph Spate, a collier, and cesus returns give her place of birth as Bilston, where her children were also born.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could look up the full marriage record for me, and also the baptisms of the bride and groom.
Unfortunately, I have no indication as to Benjamin's age, as he appears on no census records whatsoever. I do know, though, that Mary was born abut 1805.
Many thanks, folks.

Hi Ben
Nothing really concrete I'm afraid, but hope the following may give you a lead or two:
Wolverhampton St Peter's (Index only)
18 Jan 1767 Benjamin, s. of Joseph & Mary, bap.
1 Jan 1790 Mary Ann, d. of Benjamin & Ann, bap. See family search below, this could be your Benjamin's father.
4 Oct 1793 Elizabeth, d. of Benjamin & Ann, bap. See family search below, this could be your Benjamin's father.
19 May 1823 Benjamin Glover, b. & Mary Spait, s. mar. Banns (As you thought)
Family Search
30 Oct 1795 Benjamin Glover of Kidderminster, bap. Parents Benjamin & Elizabeth
25 Dec 1799 Benjamin Glover of Kinfare, bap. Mother Ann
25 Dec 1799 Benjamin Glover of Kinver, bap. Mother Ann
Bilston St Leonard's (Index only) Perhaps a long-shot but may be worth following up.
The following 3 are under the surname of Speight)
20 Jan 1799 Mary, d. of John & Mary, bap.
16 Dec 1804 Mary, d. of John and Mary, bap.
6 July 1794 John, s. of Joseph & Mary, bap.

Thanks Geoff.
I agree that these are reasonable leads. What I really need, though, is the original record of the 1823 marriage, to see if they were both from the same parish.
Just a thought, but does the index mention the father's occupation for any of the Speights you mentioned?
Also, re. the FamilySearch records, are 'Kinver' and 'Kinfare' the same place spelled differently, or two separate places?
All the best,
Ben

Hi Ben
I believe Kinfare is north of Wolverhampton and Kinver south. Yes, I found these entries odd, probably misspells somewhere along the line, since names and dates where the same.
There was no mention of an occupation for the Speight father.
You may have to get a copy of the certificates for birth/parish details.

Hi Found the marriage at records but it doesn,t give you much more than you have.
They both signed with a cross and they say they are both of this parish, but that doesn't neccesarily mean they do.
Parents aren't mentioned at that time.Otherwise it is as you say.
The Banns sadly are not at Stafford could be Wolverhampton.
Have you seen this website?

Or you could contact Wolverhampton Archives

Hiya, according to Genuki, Kinver and Kinfare are the same place, see here:

Hi Jool
Yeah, noticed that they are called the same, but that was a problem with identifying the place names because there is a Kinver near Stourbridge and a Kinfare, Wolverhampton, but unsure if this is a road/street or an area.
