Title: Costello of Galway
Post by: sarabeth on Saturday 22 October 11 20:24 BST (UK)
Hello,
I am seeking information regarding the Costello family of Galway. John Costello and Jane Flood had three known daughters: Mary Ann born in 16 September 1841, Sarah born in 1843 and finally Bridget born in 1845. I do know that Mary Ann was born in Ireland but I am not sure about the sisters. Mary Ann and her sisters ended up in Plattsburg, NY. Mary Ann married Hugh Ross and lived out her life there. Mary Ann's obituary stated that she was born in Galway on 16 September 1841. I believe Mary Ann came to the US around 1854..so the parents were probably with them. Anyone out there with any connections?..I would love to find out where in Galway they came from....Have aleady checked the IFHF. I think they might have come into the USA through Canada but I am not sure..
Thanks..
Sara C.

I also contacted the Plattsburgh City Clerk and he did not find a death record for her...I was in contact with someone last year who said that Mary Ann is buried with her sister(Sarah Grey) I believe....I don't think she is buried with Hugh Ross....She probably wanted to be buried in a Catholic cemetery..I believe Hugh was protestant.(according to my friend).  I will see if I can dig up my old emails on the subject....

Hi –

I’m researching the Costello family and recently came across your post.  I descend from John and Jane (Flood) Costello’s daughter, Sarah Theresa Costello, and her husband, Absolom Henry Grey.

Sarah Costello was born in County Galway on December 9, 1843.  On her death certificate, it says her parents were from Loughrea.  There’s a family belief that Sarah came to the U.S. with her father and two sisters, Mary Ann and Bridget Costello.  It’s also rumored that they came through Canada, rather than a U.S. port.  Unfortunately, I haven’t discovered if this is true or not.  Also, I’ve never found their father on any U.S. census.

According to the 1900 & 1910 Federal Census, Sarah Costello came over between 1858-1862.  By 1870, all three sisters were married and living in Clinton County, New York.

I’ve also heard that Sarah Costello-Grey and Mary Ann Costello-Ross are buried together.  As you listed in your post, Sarah’s buried at St. John’s Cemetery.  Her obituary backs this up.  However, my grandfather wrote in his records that Sarah Costello-Grey is buried with her sister, Mary Ann, at the Ross gravesite.  I think he must have been misinformed by someone who knew the sisters were buried together, but was confused about where.

Thanks,
Beth

Hi to you both,

You may be able to get me started on my wifes Irish line.  Up till now in the written records  they have been recorded as Ireland; Galway Ireland; Galway City Ireland.  In the spoken record Roscommon is mentioned.

Sarah Costello born ~1820 is the wife of Michael Concannon (born ~1815).  Married in Ireland .  They appear in 1851 in Whitwick, Leicestershire, England.  They had 5 children that I know of, daughter Mary (Agnes) Concannon is the lineage who marries Patrick Commons (also of Galway Ireland) in Whitwick in 1861.  Patricks father was Peter Comyns [sic].

Children of Patrick and Mary; 2 children (daughters) were left with Uncles family (Concannon) and they went off to USA with 3rd child (son).  By 1881 they returned to Whitwick with 2 more sons born USA British subject.

If any of these names sound familiar I would love to talk some more.

Best wishes,
Spark

Sorry, Spark.  None of those names are familiar.  The Sarah Costello I’m researching was born in County Galway on December 9, 1843 and died in Plattsburgh, New York on April 17, 1919.  I haven’t gotten any further back then her parents, John and Jane (Flood) Costello.

Thanks,
Beth
