Hello
Is there anyone who would look up something a bit different at Stafford Record Office please?
I am interested in the Robinson families who were tenants on the Fitzherbert estates around 1800. The Fitzherberts were Roman Catholic and let to other Roman Catholics. I am stuck with my Robinson ancestry as there are no baptisms for those who were RC in parish records. I have some info from other sources but need to find out who lived exactly where.
Ref D641/5/ES/10 at Stafford Record Office gives valuations of Fitzherbert estates for 1809 and gives names of tenants and the properties where they lived.
I am interested in Robinsons in the Swynnerton area, in particular any living at Hatton, Harley Thorn, Sandyford, Tittensor and Yarnfield. Also Knightley in the parish of Gnosall.
This is my last resort, so I do hope someone can help.
Regards

Hi Sue
Many thanks for looking up this reference for me. I had given up hope of a reply so stopped checking for one and have only now discovered your messages! So apologies if I appeared to be ungrateful by not replying straight away.
It is indeed an interesting document with the use of the old measurements, and I will have to see if I can find a detailed map showing some of the individual places mentioned.
I think John Robinson is father of Thomas. FindMyPast has a burial for a John Robinson 16/12/1810 Swynnerton, abode Hatton Mill. I have found William on censuses at Hatton with his family, but not Thomas.
I do not know if this Thomas at Hatton is my relative but at least I know that there was a Thomas Robinson at Hatton in 1809 which I didn't know before.
My Thomas was 'of Tittensor' in 1798 at his daughter Ann's marriage to Charles Kent, but could have moved. There are also other Thomas Robinsons around to make life difficult. The Robinsons of Hatton were definitely RC though, as I believe my Thomas to have been.
I add to my information bit by bit, and much appreciate your contribution.
Thanks again.

Hi Liza,
I'm glad the information has helped,I thought it might raise more questions for you.
I found it very interesting so if you want me to look for anything again just ask.

Hi Sue
How very kind of you to offer. As luck would have it I have found 2 more references for documents at Stafford RO which would give me more info if you are sure you don't mind.
D641/5/T/3/63 1765
This is the estates of Thomas Fitzherbert in 1765, giving tenants names, township, rent etc. I am interested in Robinsons in Swynnerton & Stone Parish.
D641/5/ES/1
This is "a list of inhabitants of Swynnerton in connection with highway duty, 1776". Sounds like a kind of census. I am interested in details of all Robinson families and their addresses to help with the elimination process. Could be an invaluable document if children are listed. Let's hope so.
Many thanks for offering these look-ups. I don't know if I would ever have got to the RO myself.
Best wishes
Liza

Hi Liza.
Had time to look at the first document for you D 041/5/T/3/63
This actually is composed of many parchments (First time I have had to wear the gloves!)
Of which there is not allot about tenants mostly seems to be about The various members of the Fitzherbert family and their bequests.
However there was one or two snippets!
In Doc 63
In the first year of the reign of George the First 5th October 1765
Certificate by Thomas Fernyhough clerk of the peace for the county of Stafford,of the registry of the estates of Thomas Fitzherbert Esq A Roman Catholic
Amongst others:
A message at Hareby Thorn and lands in the parishes of Swynnerton and Stone,in the holdings of Thomas Robinson at the yearly rent of 80 pounds.
Tittensor L S D
John Robinson for Thomas Fitzherbert Esq 0 9 6
Darlaston
William Robinson for Roland Hill Bart 0 1 3
James Robinson for William Plant 1 12 10
There isn,t allot in this one but the next one looks more hopeful.
Ido hope you can understand these documents!!
Liza it,s such a shame you can,t see them for yourself they are Fab The Fitzherberts were such a rich Family weren't they.
Bear with me any way and hopefully I will be able to get the next one done next time.
Iwill contact you again soon all the best Sue

You might already know, but A R P refers to acres roods and perches. I worked on quite an old-fashioned estate once with old records and had to convert all these odd measurements to hectares. One acre is 4 roods, and one rood is 40 perches. So, for example, A1 R3 P20 is 1.875 acres, which in turn is 0.76 hectares.
Hope that makes sense!
-
Hi Mike
I had heard of rods and perches but didn't know how they related to acres, so it is interesting to know that.
Thanks

Hi Sue
Thanks so much for checking out this document. It seems I am missing a treat and am glad you are enjoying handling and looking at the docs. I will get there one day!
The Thomas Robinson mentioned is a different one to the one in 1809 but I believe he is the other one's uncle. I am a bit puzzled about the John Robinson at Tittensor - thought he would be at Hatton, but it is in line with my Ann's father Thomas being 'of Tittensor' at her baptism in 1780 if John was his father. Looking promising, but will have to give this more thought.
I don't know if you found the doc hard to read but 'a message at Hareby Thorn' would likely be 'a messuage at Harley Thorn'. A messuage is a legal term denoting a property with attached buildings and land. Harley Thorn is an area in Beech and I expected this Thomas Robinson to be there from FreeReg PRs.
I think the Fitzherberts had properties in several counties. I have no rich ancestors unfortunately, have you?
I'll look forward to info from the other document. No rush.
Thanks again
Liza

Hi Liza
Happy Jubilations to you.
Yes you are probably right that I have misread some of the document, as you know they used quite flowery wrighting in those days!
I best guessed some of it and I'm glad you could decipher it.
As for rich ancestors no sadly we are all from working stock,Ag Labs Stonemasons etc.
We would be more inclined to be working for the Fitzherberts!!
We wern't by the way.Alot of our Family that started in Stafford were in the shoe industry, having moved up here from Bristol in 1871 when Stafford became a boom town for the industry and Bristol sadly was declining, however my sister and I declare this is why we can't stop bying shoes it is in our blood Ha Ha.
I hope you and yours are having a great weekend Liza and I will get back to you when I can with the next docs info.
All the best Sue

Hi Sue
Absolutely great stuff! Many thanks for all the time you have spent doing this for me.
The weather has been awful lately so I have been busy. I have printed everything out so I can compare the farm holdings with each other. From the last listing of Thomas's farm holdings it appears that by 1809 quite a few of them have been transferred to William. I had William down as being Samuel's son, but it is just possible he was Thomas's.
It is really interesting comparing the holdings of the farms over time. You can follow a person's life by the movements of pieces of land.
I still can't believe how much stuff was in that last doc - the bit I asked for was only one tiny bit of it, but I had thought it was the whole doc. I've had a look on the SRO online catalogue and it lists all the different bits and pieces, so I obviously wasn't very thorough with my notes for the refs first time round. It was very good of you to go through the whole document - over and above the call of duty!
The earlier details are very welcome as I can tie them in with the earlier Robinsons known to me. The 1711/12 bit was a very pleasant surprise. The Thomas mentioned is the earliest Robinson I knew about at Swynnerton. It looks like William's rental is being transferred to Thomas as 2 amounts match, so William could be Thomas's father.
It is unfortunate that names of farms are generally not given until after 1800. I will be on the lookout for an old map of Swynnerton which will hopefully list the fields etc in detail by name so I can find the location of the farms.
Whilst checking the SRO online catalogue, I gave it a more thorough look and there are other bits and pieces which might be useful. I am looking at bridging the gap between the farm breakdowns in 1765 and the end of the century, just to be more certain I have got things right. I am puzzled by the 'Thomas Robinson for carriages and sythes' in Swynnerton in 1776.
I don't want you to spend a lot more time looking things up for me, so have selected what looks the most straightforward as well as the most useful, if you are still willing.

Please take your time with these look-ups if you are willing to do them. It's quite OK though if you have had enough.
Rob's Staffs ancestors all seem to be farmers, with a few blacksmiths thrown in! My Yorkshire and elsewhere ancestors were mostly tradesmen, blacksmiths, shoemakers and quite a few stone masons. I think I might have liked to be a stone mason if I had been a man in those times!
Thanks again for all you help.
Best wishes

Hi Liza.
I'm glad that the information makes sense to you,I wasn't sure I was making it very clear!
Liza I will gladly look up your other doc's for you but you might have to bear with me for a few weeks as Derek and I have a busy time coming up, his daughter is getting married on the 1st of June and it is all systems go at the moment. So if you don't hear from me for a while don't be surprised. I will go back to records when they (the happy couple) are safely on their Honeymoon and all has calmed down again.Infact Iwill probably be ready for some quiet time!
So "speak" to you soon all the best Sue

Hi Sue
No problem, I'm quite happy to wait. Glad you are willing to check out the docs, it is being so useful when I was really stuck.
I assume you mean 1st July for the wedding. I will keep fingers crossed it goes well, and felicitations to the happy couple!
Thanks again.
All the best

Brilliant Sue. Thank you very much.
Glad the wedding went well. Hope the happy couple had better weather on their honeymoon than we have been having here!

Hi again, sadly no they didn't have good weather at all. They went to St Agnes in Cornwall and they said it didn't stop to rain most of the time!
Though they ( Gemma & Adam) visited quite a few places round and about and say they had a good time.
What a summer eh, we can't wait to be able to get a couple of cheap weeks away abroad, hopefully at the beggining of September. As i'm writing this it is STILL heaving it down here in Stafford and we haven't sat outside once in the evenings this year.
Still what would us Brits moan about if we haven't got the weather eh Ha Ha
I will be in touch soon Sue
