If anyone has access to the Barnsley census for 1901 or 1911 I'd be interested to know who the other members of Joseph Gilleghan's household was. The 1901 census seems to have milspelt the surname as Gillsghan.
He was my great grandfather but is a bit of a mystery. He married Matilda Selina Wilson in Barnsley in 1920 and his marriage certificate names his father as George Gilleghan. I believe his mother was Lucy (maiden name not known) but I can find no marriage for his parents and seem to have hit a brick wall :(

Hi
1901 gives 2 year old Joseph with his mother Lucy, a 33 year old married housekeeper, and a sibling John A (or H) who was 7. All born Barnsley and living at 32 Wortley St, Barnsley (RG13/4315/74/32)
Did he serve in World War One? (if he did the papers only identify Lucy and no other family members though)

This may be significant (but may not of course)
In 1901 Lucy is a housekeeper to James Jackson 26 yrs. Both are entered on the census as married and the boys were described as 'son' but this has been crossed through and boarder written above.

can't find a marriage either...
the only Gilleghan to a Lucy is a Frederick Thomas Gilleghan but Lucy is far too young to marry him if 33 is correct on the 1901

Thanks for the quick replies. It's interesting there's no sign of a George (as named as the father on his marriage certificate). I don't know who the James Jackson is that he was living with in 1901 so the mystery deepens.

We aren't allowed to do 1911 look ups and can only post what can be found in the free index.
Her birth year in 1911 is 1873 (compared to 1868) in 1901. This of course makes it more difficult to find her in earlier censuses.
Joseph's birth certificate would give his mother's name.

Birth for John Herbert Gilleghan 1894 - and death in 1912 for John H (born 1894)
