Title: finding a death
Post by: cass on Friday 21 October 11 20:31 BST (UK)
Am looking for the death of Sarah Ann Fagan born in Ireland in 1869. Have found her in Workington on the 1901 census but cant find her on the 1911. Her husband was re-married in 1904 and his children were living with him and his new wife so i presume that Sarah must be dead but cant find her death. Can anyone help? Deb

She can be found in 1901, born Stoke on Trent, living in Midlesbrough, aged 46

as opposed to the one in Workington, aged 31 born Ireland.  :-\

Hi Cass

I can look at burial entries for those cemeteries especially as you have a fairly close date.

I'll see what I can see.

Best wishes

thank you Emms. Her daughter Rose was born in the march quarter 1901 and died in the Dec quarter 1901. Wonder if both deaths were related? Cass

Hi Cass

I drew a blank at first - cemetery records either not available or not at this date.

I looked at Netherhall Cemetery wwhich are available though not the one I wanted and they weren't there.

Looked at St Michael Workington .  Very few burials by this date and not there.

Then I went with my gut instinct - name like Fagan, Irish RC?  So I looked in Workington RC for a burial record and sure enough, both are there!

Interestingly, they are in the quarters you said but no indication of them being linked.  Obviously you know from other sources that they are.

It's in Latin but it's pretty self evident.  I gave up copying word for word but I'll put it up oin the next post.

Best wishes

Hi again  :)

1901  Anno 1901 die 16 mensis Julii  Sarah Fagan ex Workington

aetatis 31 in……[ Sacramento munit crossed out]

, die 19 Julii sepultum,........................................., publico

Joannes Standish          Mis Coady

I've missed out the long pretyped latin, but the bit in brackets basically means she didn't receive the final sacraments of the church.  Literally fortified by the rites of the church and then known as last rites or Extreme Unction.

Basically though:

Sarah Fagan, aged 31 from Workington died 16th Jult 1901 and was buried on the 19th following a service in the Roman Catholic Church at Workington. There's a similar entry for the little girl Rose Anna:

1901  Ano 1901 die 6 mensis Octobris Rosa Anna

Fagan ex Workington eatatis infant………..,,…..

Die 8 Octobris sepultum……………in cemeterio publico

Franciscus Hutchinson OSB MissApso

ie. An infant Rose Anna Fagan of Workington died 6th October 1901 and was buried the 8th October in the public cemetery, following a ceremony at Workington RC Church.

This was Our Lady Star of the Sea, and until very recently it was run by priests from the Benedictine order.  There was also a hospital.

Then they were both buried in the public cemetery.

It was these cemetery records I didn't find.

I'll double check though.  I didn't have time to ask or look on the shelves at transcripts.

Best wishes

Emms   :)
