Hi,
I'd appreciate any help with my Paget relations of Knockglass, Crossmolina who were certainly C of I. My gg grandfather was James Paget of Kinard Lodge near Enniscrone who died there in 1872 aged 69. I have his death certificate. Who were his parents though? I believe Kinard was purchased in 1810 by a "James Paget of Knockglass, Crossmolina". Was that the father of our James (who'd have been aged only 7 in 1810!)? Was our James the brother or the cousin of his near contemporary Thomas Paget of Knockglass? I know that Thomas had a son who was later "Captain James Paget of Knockglass". I find many references on the web and in gazeteers etc. to both James and Thomas between 1825 and 1875, but the precise relationships are very difficult to tease out. I was hoping the local COI church records might help. I suppose it's hoping for too much for an 1803 baptism record though.
I'd even be happy to find someone else who's interested in this family.

I think this is great! However if anyone is at St. Mary's COI Church, Crossmolina and can let me know all the exact wording on the pinkish granite headstone for James Paget, Thomas Cecil and Jane Caroline Paget, I'd be very grateful. It's hard to read from the photo, but is well engraved and looks as though if you were there you could run your fingers over it to help pick out the words. If not for this project, I wouldn't have even known it was there. Thanks again.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat :)
I can (I am fairly sure) see that James was in the Connaught Rangers.
Looking at your other post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,225798.160.html you are already aware of him being Captain Paget and therefore have this information.
There is a marriage announcement for James Paget in 1857 to Jane Caroline Knox. His father named as Thomas.

Hi Marcella,
There are some Paget graves in St Mary's Church (C of I) in Crossmolina. They are listed on the GoldenLangan.com web site at
http://goldenlangan.com/graves-sy.html .
Not sure if these are of your family, but good luck, David

Thanks oishiidesu, Yes I saw that topic and posted there too. Great idea. However the two Paget headstones there are for the younger generation and don't help answer my question about the parents of our James Paget who died in 1872 aged 69.

Thanks Heywood, I'm pretty sure that all three of those Pagets on the headstone and in the marriage announcement are from the generation later than the lot whose relationships have me mystified - Thomas P of Knockglass and his (younger) brother (or cousin?) James Paget, my gg grandfather, who died in 1872 aged 69.

Thanks Heywood again for sorting out the topic. In the hope that someone else might be interested in the Pagets of Mayo and Sligo, here's the link to my family history website:

Thanks Diski, I appreciate that - as you say, a bit sparse, but getting there. I think this family spent a bit of time in Dublin too, so might look into registers there.

the following may be of help: http://www.linleyfh.com/oursecondsite-p/p597.htm
this is a website with similar names and reference to Major James Paget
James PAGET(died 1901) married Jane Caroline KNOX(died 1906) of Mayo in Dublin on Aug 19 1857
Civil reference Dublin South 1857 Vol 5 Page 290 in St. Mark's Parish
Church record: http://www.rootschat.com/links/0gb0/
Jane was the daughter of Major John KNOX of Greenwood Park & Jane Adelaide HANDY
They had several children according to the linleyfh.com site; I can see Thomas Cecil Oct 27 1984 (bap Crossmolina) registered BALLINA V19 P22 and female Oct 05 1866 (bap Crossmolina) registered BALLINA V19 P21 but not the others easily.
Listed on another web site is Jane PAGET m. henry Julien RICHARDS of Barnagh House, Mayo 1893; Annie PAGET m. Thomas Robert HENDERSON 1902; Violet & Caroline
Thomas Cecil PAGET died in Dublin South Jul-Sep 1890 aged 25 ref: V2 P401
A follow up on wills could provide more information

Thanks Myluck, I was amused to see in that 1857 wedding record for Captain James Paget, that his father- in-law was his witness. That was because the groom's father was bitterly opposed to the marriage. An article in the Freeman's Journal of 21 Nov 1857 describes how Thomas Paget verbally attacked John Knox his fellow magistrate, during a court hearing, for having stolen his son! I wonder why he was so opposed?
These details are interesting, but my original question remains. Who was the father of James Paget of Kinard (1803-1872) and what relation was he to the bad-tempered Thomas Paget of Knockglass?

Probably no news to you, but may be of help to someone else researching these families.

Yes you're right pastmagic. That's really useful information for this family, and it originally helped me identify my gg grandfather James paget and put me on the track of the several Pagets who emigrated to Australia in 1877. Up until then, we only knew of my great grandmother (and alias) Marcella who came out here. I'll be following up on some of the references it mentions on my trip to Dublin.

If you're interested in this family, I've found out much, MUCH more about them in the last few months and have written up what I've discovered on my website:
http://taggerty.wordpress.com/
I've also contributed the details of the deeds I've consulted to the Registry of Deeds index project which should gradually become a fabulous online genealogy resource.

Many thanks to those on this site for your help and encouragement.

Hi... It was fascinating to read all you've uncovered about the Pagets on your website. I tried to comment there, but my comment didn't appear for some reason, so I decided to try here. My interest in the Pagets stems from the fact that I own a small part of what was once the Fahy estate. More interestingly, I own the site where the house stood, along with a couple of derelict outhouses and half of the walled garden. It was very interesting reading about the people who lived there, and what went on. Anyway, hopefully you'll get to see my comment here.........

Replying to Michael P.H.: Apologies for taking so long to approve your comment on my website. I had moved on to other interests for a while. I approved it the other day. It's really interesting that you live at the site of Fahy House. Please let me know if you learn anything else about the Pagets!

Just thought I'd let you know that Knockglass house is up for sale again. The photos of the house might be of interest......... or perhaps even an opportunity for a Paget to return to Knockglass! ;) https://www.daft.ie/for-sale/detached-house-knockglass-house-knockglass-crossmolina-co-mayo/5412099
