Hi Rootschatters,
Looking for information on the gent above who I think went to Australia c1855 (gold rush era) from Ireland. He hailed from Wexford Ireland and his wife Mary Anne Ferres (daughter of Dr Samuel Ferres) was from Larne Co. Antrim, Ireland.
I've come across a few intriguing snippets that mention an Adam Loftus Lynn, Attorney, Ballarat, but havent been able to follow any of these up cos cant access the sites.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Margaret

Hi Leanne,
Amazing! Thanks so much.
Having a bit of difficulty searching on the pages for Adam Loftus Lynn - any hints appreciated! Time for bed now in a wet and cold Belfast. I'll have another go in the morning when I have a clearer head!

Leanne, Judith, Sue and Merlin,
WHOA!
This is amazing information - thank you all so much for your help!
I'd come across a brief snippet online of an Adam Loftus Lynn in Ballart and thought that is worth a chance posting on the Oz board as its such an uncommon name.
I've absolutely no experience of Australian records and had no idea of what is available on line. Really great to get this information!

Hi Margaret
Australian BMDs are recorded by State authorities so are slightly different according to the State which holds the particular record. Images from Victorian historical records can be downloaded straight to your computer for $AU17.50 each. You will need the registration numbers which you have been given or it is another 99c.
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=purchaseImage
NSW BMDS need to be ordered and then are sent to you but there are registered transcription agents which are cheaper and quicker and will email you. It won't load for me at the moment but you can find the names of the three agents on the NSW BMD site.
just a tip - if you are using google you might find better links if you use the Aussie version www.google.com.au

Adam Loftus Lynn came to Australia in 1850, from Wexford, via Liverpool on a vessel called the Hudson, Master Captain McNeil. He landed with his wife, 10 children and a maid. One child was born on the voyage and another in Sydney. He attempted, twice unsuccessfully, to mine for gold, then took up being a Solicitor in Ballarat, assumed to be its first. Appeared for the Scobie family in the Eureka case and clashed with D'Ewes, one of the Magistrates. Owned at least three properties in Ballarat and a grand daughter insisted he erected the first house, but the claim depends on the definition of a house. Eventually gave up lawyering for being Sec. of Cemetery Trust. Two buildings still bear his name. A redhead, as were all his 8 daughters and at least one son; of his wife and other two sons, hair colour is unknown. Died 1878 and buried in Old Cemetery with son-in-law.
Stories of all his children interesting.
