Hi all,
I've been searching my tree for a while and it's all been Scotland/Ireland until now.
My greatx3 grandfather was John Henry Leake, a fish hook maker living in Glasgow in the 1870s>; he was apparantley born in Plymouth ~1834. From his marriage certificate in Scotland, it lists his parents as:
John Lake (Inspector of Police) & Mary Ann (Moffatt).
Any help/direction on this line is much appreciated.

There's no sign of John born in Plymouth or surrounding area on the 1841,51 or 61 census under Lake, Leek or Leake.

I'm dubious about the term Inspector of Police as meaning Police Inspector if as you suggest it may have been circa John (juniors) younger years.
This might be of some use to you in the future though. It's the website for Devon and Cornwall Police and they have the Archives for Devon Constabulary from 1850. Prior to that Parish Constables were elected in their local Parish. There is also an email link which allows you to contact them via a form.

On the website 'Findmypast' which lists basic census info - I found the following in the English 1841 Census:
Household - LEAKE, John 1811 (age) 30 M Plymouth Devonshire.
The age would certainly tie in for my Gx3 Grandfather being born ~1834 as John Leake(Lake?) Snr would have been ~23 years old. Nothing for John jnr though?!
Unfortunately while I believe John was born in Plymouth and his father was an Inspector of Police, I don't know for sure if it was in the Devon area. I will though try the Police info you gave me.

I saw that John Leake and dismissed it because he was a Private in the 53rd Regiment.
Address: Royal Marines, Mill Bay, Plymouth.
The only other info is that he was born in Ireland. It doesn't have a column for marital status.
Like you I couldn't find John Junior nor Elizabeth. However they could have moved from Plymouth after John juniors birth so they could be anywhere.

Thanks for that - yes I agree that it is definately possible that John Leake/Lake & Mary Ann (Moffat) moved away from Plymouth soon after John Leake jnr was born. When I get some more credits, I will have a look at John Leake's death certificate and see if that has any more info.
