My interest is in the Hine family, many of whom were stonemasons in the Sidmouth/ Littleham area in the 19th century. Specific names are Edwin Stewart Hine (1844-1899) who married twice; secondly to Clara Dyble. His father Henry Hine (1823-1875), whose parents appear to be Henry and Hannah Hine. There is a Henry Hine, stonemason, in the 1830 Pigot's Directory but perhaps someone has some more tangible( I nearly said concrete...) information? HH

1861 census RG9 1382 folio 75 Strand Littleham Devon
Agnes Hine 1805 Otterton, Devon, England Head Widow
Emily M Hine 1853 Exmouth, Devon, Daughter
Edwin S Hine 1845 Exmouth, Devon, Son stonemason
There is a Henry Hine on the census birth circa 1823 in Sidmouth. He is married in Exeter with two sons (both born Wales). This Henry was a cabinet maker.
Edwin Stewart Hine was still in Littleham on the 1871 census with wife Mary E and three sons. He was a stonemason employing one labourer.
Agnes his widowed mother and Emily his sister were living next door.

Thanks Valda! Really helpful information. I had the 1871, but only of Edwin. I've visited the cemetary at Littleham so have details of various Hines from gravestones, but couldn't find Edwin. I have Edwin's second marriage cert., showing him as a widower and his father as Henry. There is a Henry Hine buried at Littleham, twin brother of Thomas, born Sidmouth 1823, but this doesn't seem to tie up with Agnes's d.o.b. She would have been 18 years older than Henry! So was she his second wife, or is it a different Henry? Edwin was definitely born in St.Thomas area, I presume at Littleham.

On the 1861 census you have a Henry Hine and his family in Exeter
Henry Hine 1823 Sidmouth Head Exeter All Hallows on the Wall Devon Cabinetmaker
Elizabeth M Hine 1824 Sidmouth Wife Exeter All Hallows on the Wall Devon
James H Hine 1859 Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales Son Exeter All Hallows on the Wall Devon
Sidney G Hine 1860 Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales Son Exeter All Hallows on the Wall Devon
The only other obvious Hine on the census born Sidmouth is in Teignmouth
William S Hine 1819 Sidmouth, Devon, England Head East Teignmouth Devon Statutory (?) and mason
Anna Maria Hine 1827 Exmouth, Devon, England Sister East Teignmouth Devon
The IGI has some baptisms for Sidmouth
HENRY HINE
Christening: 28 FEB 1823 Marsh Chapel-Independent, Sidmouth, Devon, England
Father: HENRY HINE Mother: HANNAH
JOHN STRACHLEY HINE
Christening: 10 JUN 1821 Marsh Chapel-Independent, Sidmouth, Devon, England
Father: HENRY HINE
Mother: HANNAH
THOMAS HINE
Christening: 28 FEB 1823 Marsh Chapel-Independent, Sidmouth, Devon, England
Father: HENRY HINE
Mother: HANNAH
The IGI gives a likely marriage
HENRY HINES
Spouse: HANNAH DAVEY STRATCHLEY
Marriage: 20 AUG 1817 Saint Mary Steps, Exeter, Devon, England
But the IGI has no parish records for Sidmouth and really to know anything further you need to look at the parish registers and censuses earlier than 1861 for in the case of parish registers both Sidmouth and Littleham and may be both for censuses. Without information from these sources your knowledge will only remain fragmentary.

On FreeBMD this could be Edwin's sister - the district is right for Littleham

Does anyone have any leads on the name "Meneen"? Emily Meneen would seem to be Edwin Stewart Hine's sister, but Agnes would have been about 48 when she had her!
I still can't pin down the Henry Hine I need, but one appears in Pigot's 1830 Directory, Masons and Bricklayers, in Strand, where the family lived for many years in Littleham. As Edwin became a stonemason, this could be my man.

Thanks- really helpful!!
The 1851 is particularly useful, as it's Edwin who we need to track back, he being my husband's g.grandfather.
I'd guessed Henry must have been born about 1790, so now I just need more leads on him and any other siblings ( or half siblings ) of Edwin. I suspect Agnes was a second wife, being 14 years younger than Henry. Mind you, she had Emily at about 45 so Henry didn't do too badly for an old 'un!
I have the 1881, so will look into it further.

The picture is starting to fall into place: Henry Hine firstly married Hannah Davey Strachley or Stretchley in Exeter in 1817 and they had several children. In the 1841 (thanks Kris), I suspect he was a widower. He married Agnes Algar in 1843, probably in Littleham and they went on to have at least 3 children. Any leads on Agnes, born abt 1805 in Otterton??
All the Hines born around the 1820s were offspring of the first marriage, then Edwin, Mark and Emily, born between 1844 and 1850. There's also an Emma -ene Hine who died in 1851. Who is this?

Thanks, Kris
I assume that was the 1841 from the format?
I'd love to find out where the name Meneen came from, but all I can find is a boat from about 1897, so who or what was it named after? It is an Arabic word- anyone know its literal meaning?

Hi, just found this forum. I realise the last posts on this thread were a few years ago, but thought I'd mention that Edwin Hine was also my great grandfather. My grandfather was William Henry Hine, stonemason in Exmouth.

The Henry Hines who married Hannah Davey Stratchley in Exeter in 1817 is shown as a stonemason so good chance this is your ancestor. I have a few ancestral lines from Littleham and some of them married in Exeter so its not uncommon. The image of the marriage is on FindMyPast. The Davey in her name should help you to trace her back.
