Good afternoon,
Could someone please advise whether a list of Probates for Birmingham pre 1841 has been released ?
I'm looking for a Joseph Grove/s from Wolverhampton - who may've died in the Birmingham area 1823 - 1841. He was married to Jane ? & a spectacle and steel toy maker by trade.
They had 8 chn in Wolverhampton from 1794 - 1810.
I've checked the PCC listing & counted out the 1851 & 1847 Birmingham ones for Joseph Grove/s.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

This is a question worth putting to Birmingham City Councils Heritage and Archive group.

Good morning,
I heard back from the Archives yesterday & they suggested that I get in contact with the Staffordshire Archives at their site www.staffordshire.gov.uk/archives.
They explained that all wills (except PCC) proved in Birmingham can be found at the Lichfield Records Office as at that time Birmingham & Wolverhampton were part of the Litchfield Diocese.
Also that they have a project to index the early Wills from the 17th & 18th Century, but check to see whether they can look at later indexes.
Which of course, I will do. Hope this assists someone else.

Hi,
I've heard back from Lichfield in which a very kind archivist's assistant fully answered my question plus added a little extra.
BUT - I also did find, for those of us near an LDS library, that the indexes for the Calendar of wills & admons 1651-1860 for this Diocese have been filmed by the LDS, along with the original wills, admons & inventories.
In the Catalogue look under: England Warwick . . . . then Probate indexes . . . then looking for the Diocese of Lichfield records.
Thank you for the helpful advice given by others.
