Title: Saltley Reformatory School
Post by: hadrian14 on Friday 14 October 11 13:26 BST (UK)
Hi,

Ff any one has access to the records of Saltley Reformatory School I would appreciate as much info as possible on my ancestor THOMAS BULLOCK.

Born 1880 in Castleford West Yorks, he appears on 1891 Census as scholar at Saltley R.S aged 11.

I would love to know what he went there for, he has always been a bit of a mystery.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Wow!! Thanks...

Thats more than I'd ever thought I'd get, Thomas what a naughty lad!

To add to his story, he went back to Pontefract and by the 1901 Census had 'married' my great gran, well thats what they said on the form although no marriage cert can be traced yet,  they had 2  children (1 died within an month of being born).  By 1906  Thomas had disappeared and my great gran had married my great grandad and he brought up  Thomas' daughter as his own.

You have been very kind in helping, thank you again -  Jo

I've just stumbled on this message board, and this post following a web search on Reformatory school admission records.

I think I may have an ancestor that went to Saltley Reformatory School. If Dusty2 or anyone else has access to the admission records and could do a search for me, I'd be VERY grateful.

The person I'm interested in is Joseph Willis born 1833/1836/1839 in Droitwich Worcestershire. He is listed as having been in the Saltley Reformatory School on teh 1861 census as a gardener.

Ah - Joseph Willis will have been a member of the staff. The admissions register only deals with the boys who have committed an offence and have been sentenced to spend time at the Reformatory. There may be other records for the Reformatory held in Birmingham Archives at the City Library that contain information, but I do not have these. Sorry I can't help.

What a fascinating little story. It certainly brings the lad to life!

I wonder what happened to him eventually.

Thankyou  for the information. Of course even at the latest he could've been born 1839, it would make him 22 in 1861. Hardly a "boy" of course!
