Hi I am after any info on the above, born around 1853. Father was James quelch (DOB 30/03/1828) who was a tanner married to Mary Ann born 1830 and died 1858. I think there son Alfred had a middle name "James" and he emigrated to New Zealand sometime in the late 1860's early 70's (could be wrong though).
Thanks

Hi Kesia05
May be worth re-posting on the Oxfordshire forum, according to FindMyPast
there is a James Quelch b.1828 Oxford , a Carrier & wife Mary A Quelch b.1830 Oxford residing at 8 Albert Street, St Ebbe, Oxford. and also according to FindMyPast in 1/4 of 1853 the birth of an Alfred James Stephen Quelch was registered in the Oxford district Vol:3a Page:531
Somebody may be able to check the St Ebbe parish records to confirm is these are your folks

Thanks I was beginning to think the same.
Not sure I am related to an Alfred James Quelch who was for a time an Ironmonger in Timaru NZ. He was married in 1876 in Dunedin NZ but was not born in NZ. He also does not appear in any passenger list so it is a stab in the dark. Hopefully I'll get back to NZ next year so I can look into his probate.

Hello
Alfred James Quelch is my great grandfather. My mother Gwen Quelch was the youngest daughter of John Hector Quelch - who was one of 5 sons and 2 daughters of Alfred James and Ellen Josephine (nee Fleming) Quelch. I have very little on Alfred's origins apart from being born circa 1851, Oxfordshire, worked as an ironmonger and immigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand in 1870.
He married Ellen Josephine Fleming, of Co. Limerick, Ireland (b. circa 1854 Ireland) in Dunedin 19 April 1876. Alfred died 21 April 1943 Dunedin and is buried with his wife at Anderson Bay Cemetery Dunedin.
He ran an ironmonger business in Timaru and also operated in Dunedin. Their home was at 2 Victoria Street, Mosgiel just south of Dunedin and still stands today - a beautiful two storey wooden homestead.
I have quite a considerable amount of information about the Quelch and the Fleming families of their time here in New Zealand. I would be very interested in knowing about the Quelch family prior to immigrating. I think some of his siblings ended up in Australia, but can not verify this.

OK made my point on another thread on similar theme, but for any new researchers of the Quelch line, and myself , where do the 2 Rachels go to in 1841/51?

Hello
Firstly, my apologies Alfred died on the 12 June 1933 aged 82 and not 21 April 1943 (as I previously said). His wife Ellen died on 21 April 1943. He had been in New Zealand for 63 years - immigrated about 1870. Therefore the Alfred referred to in 1871 census as ironmongers assistant may not be the same. Also, if he was 18 years old in 1871 that makes his birth about 1853. The census information I have is:
1861 - Alfred James Quelch male, 11 years, son, St. Ebbe Oxford, Holy Trinity Parish Oxfordshire
1851 - Alfred Quelch male, 1 year, son, Oxford, Oxfordshire
Both records aligning more closely with 1851 birth year.
FYI - Alfred's ironmonger business in Timaru lasted from 1883 to 1888 when it became bankrupt. He had the sole contract with the Timaru Habour Board, a major client, who switched to a competitor Priest & Holdgate. Alfred also had the agency for milking machines and a threshing grain machine. The loss of business and capital outlay over stretched the business finances. He returned to Dunedin in 1888 with his family.

Hello
Census source is 2011 International Genealogical Index - a service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Have received burial records from Dunedin City Council Cemetery Archives.
Have also ordered Alfred James Quelch death record from NZ Internal Affairs Government Agents. This record holds parents names, wifes name, off-spring number & age at time of deat and cause of death. Expect delivery within next 3 weeks (slow due to time of year). Will provide further details to you when received.
Re your last comment - it is totally feasible that separate individuals have same name even within dates closer than 2 years - even possibly related with the same job. Having studied naming conventions; family work operations and business structures the likelihood of this occurring is highly probable during this time. Even today my wifes sister and brother each have a daughter named Rachael both girls were born within 6 months of each other and both are nurses. There names have a history whereas their occupations coincidential.

Thanks Keyboard86, your search has not gone to waste and I appreciate your help. I ended up placing a completed aspect on the search as I new I'd be busy over the Nov Dec period, added to that my computer died, so I have updated to a apple mac which means I will have to go to a new geneology database as the current one I use is a windows only base program. Hopefully I'll get back into in the next month or two. Thanks again
