Title: Maine's Farm, Beeding Road, Steyning, Sx
Post by: Watermusic on Thursday 13 October 11 23:04 BST (UK)
Hi,
My Great Great Grandmother, Rachel Fry (née Backholer) b. 1813  Chardstock, widow, died at this farm in 1899, and her son, George Fry b. 1840, Chardstock, had come down from Camberwell to be with her when she died.

I was wondering 'What on earth was she doing in Sussex??'
She was in Kent in 1881, with her daughter Annie and son-in-law, Henry Down, and still with them in 1891, but in Somerset. Annie died 1893 Shepton Mallet.

Is it possible to look up the farm, Maines Farm, on the 1891 and 1901 to give a bit of a clue as to who was living there at those times.

Thank you
Watermusic

Hi Doran,
Herbert Fry c. 1873... now there's a mystery!

The nearest I can find is Harry Fry, born Bromley, Kent 1873, who was her grandson (and my grandfather) - so the year and north Kent.... But he was christened Harry Alexander, and he was in Camberwell in 1891 and 1901.

I will investigate!
Thanks for that!

Looks like this is another 'surplus' Fry family! As far as I can tell they are not related to my Frys at all, although there is the possibility that they are descended from one of Rachel's late husband's brothers.

I had trouble with the first death certificate for Rachel Fry, as there was one who died in Shepton Mallet, which, as she was last seen with the Down family who moved there from Kent, I assumed was 'mine'.
Turns out that the Shepton Mallet one was from an Evercreech and Wells family of Frys.

Thanks for all your information on Herbert - I couldn't find him at all on FreeCen, FreeBMD or FreeReg. Familysearch turned up a couple of entries - one was his possible birth, and the other, the 1901 census. Now to trace Philip back a couple of generations....

Thanks again

Hi Doran,
Having found that Philip was born in Charlton, Wiltshire I have also been investigating on the Wiltshire board, and it seems that 1841 Philip (1836) the son of William is not the Philip (1831) we are looking for, as some one has found Philip (1836) and father William at West Dean on the 1851.

The 1851 North Cerney one looks to be the right Philip Fry, as the birth year is only a year out and his occupation is Gardener.
Bliss does not connect with anyone on my charts.

Looks like I'm going to have to order his marriage certificate to get any further back on this line!

Thanks,
Watermusic

Thanks for your work....but it is beginning to look as if he's not related at all, and the surname, Fry, is just a coincidence.

Still, what an over 80 year old with a gammy leg was doing at a farm in Steyning around the turn of the century, will have to remain a mystery.

Any names at the main Maine's farmhouse, 'Lewis' comes to mind, or anyone obviously born in Dorset/Devon?

Cheers

I have just found a copy of a ten year old letter that was sent to another relative.

The family I am looking for is Lewis/Lewes. It seems that they may have been in Beeding around this time.
