Can anyone spot this family in 1871, please?
1881 Census at 11 Penrhos, Bangor
WILLIAM HUGHES 49 PLATELAYER
ELIZABETH HUGHES 39
CHILDREN GWEN HUGHES 12 , JANE HUGHES 10 (plus younger children who will obviously not show up in 1871)
All born Caernarvonshire.
(Piece 5576. Folio 123 Page 23)
I have found them still in Bangor in 1891. Father's birthplace was given as Bethel, Caernarvonshire and occupation railway platelayer. Mother was born in Bangor, Caernarvonshire. (Piece 4667, Folio 65, Page 10)
;) Of course, in view of my long-standing brick wall, I will be hoping they are to be found in the 1871 Census with a 5 year old son, born in Bangor and who was named after his father ;)
Many thanks

Ah, thank you, liz.
It was the Grace that threw me.
Grace=Gwen presumably?
Wrong ones for me anyway :'(

Shame it was the wrong one for you, because it's the right one for me if any relatives ever read this!! William and Elizabeth are my GG grandparents and I was just getting excited.,..

Yes, Grace equals Gwen here...

Hi Jack55!
Would you be able to confirm then that this family didn't have a son William born Bangor c1866/67?
I have always thought if he did belong to this family, that there might have been a remote possibility that he could have been staying with a relative on the Census night in 1871 and by the 1881 census, could have been working elsewhere as a servant or farmhand.
Despite, the very common names, I have scoured records for a number of years looking for my gg William Hughes born Bangor 1866/67. All I know about his birth family (if he told the truth on his subsequent marriage certificate) is that his father was William Hughes a Platelayer. My gg appeared not to have maintained links with his birth family, moving to Dolwyddelan by 1891. I know his story post 1891, just not earlier.
Cheers

That's an interesting one; I cant confirm that they didn't have one at that time, as later census do not provide that support. In many ways the above lot should have had a William. And William Hughes the platelayer is correct; and this lot are family.
Perhaps the answer would be if you can put in some of the story post 1891 as we can then check against our data. For example, do 11 Penros and 9 Hendrewan Road mean anything to you...

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I don't have any further Bangor connections through my research, other than the fact Bangor was stated consistently throughout his life as his place of birth. So, no, those addresses are not familiar.
I have posted about him, quite a lot and you can see my former posts if you click on my name, some of the earlier posts are speculative and contain information that has subsequently been discounted.
Appreciate your input.
Thanks

Thank you for your information but I think we must be talking about different William Hughes the platelayer.
