Looking for the birth of my great grandfather William O'Neil born 1851, Maryport, Cumberland. He was amerchant seaman, his fathers name was Andrew O'Neil Don't know where he was born. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Redhen  :) Hi Bob  :)

How accurate is the 1851?  Do you have him on 1851 or 1861 census?

I wonder if they were Irish with a name like that?  They might have taken him back to Ireland to baptise him.

Quite a few of my own Irish in Salford / Manchester / Heywood Lancs did that, even when thery'd had a child over here, or got married or had a child baptised over here.

I'll see what I can see!

best wishes

Emms  :)

PS I found the entries on familysearch and / or Irishgenealogy both free online but not complete!  Fortunately mine were in Dublin - loads of entries!

Found in Glamorgan archives in ship records sailed 1867 to neath s.wales but says he was born in Cork Ireland. The next ship record found it says he was born in Maryport Cumberland.  Clyde

Hi

Looks as if it's worth a look in the area anyway, and at Crosscannonby and nearby.

Thanks for explaining.

Best wishes
