Post by: Joy123 on Monday 10 October 11 13:03 BST (UK)
Hi, does anyone know where I can find more details on an army deserter in 1916 please? he didn't get shot but I'm sure he must have been punished

thanks

Might be worth looking for his service record if you are happy to put more information on here.  There is a lovely commemoration at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to those who did get shot if you are ever anywhere near there.

you need Gerard Oram's book on the 3000 + death sentences passed in WW1. If you want to give the surname I'll have a look.

Only if he was captured or gave himself up before the eventual amnesty.

Do you know how long he deserted for?
It wasn't unusual to end up back in the army etc.

hi, and thanks for replying, another forum told me about the desertion, I now want to see if he re-enlisted.

His name was Henry Mcleod Irvine born liverpool 1886

He enlisted in the Navy in 1904 and was thrown out in 1908 for jumping ship a few times, (I downloaded this from national archives)

In 1915 he joined the Inniskillin Fusiliers under the name Henry Irving, (his brother had joined them first), I was told by another forum he deserted 2 months later and never went to war.

BTW...I have ancestry but really dont understand the military information

My problem is his family say served abroad in the cavalry in WW1, and there was a picture of him in uniform on a horse, they are searching for this picture, it has not been seen for years, I know if I had this you could tell me the regiment..

I dont know how to move forward with the cavalry records, as he would have to change his name again I would think, but am sure it would have been a close match to his real name..

I really need your help guys

Joyce
