We can't 'do' any looking-for-the-living requests..

You best sources are going to be census and BMD's

Stockton do have a local BMD site, so be sure to use that where it's shown to be appropriate.

Hi, Pauline,
Thank you for your prompt reply to my request. In fact, I am looking for the ancestors of the Lishman family, not the living. Since they have been playing around with Hugh Wallis Numbers & familysearch.org, I find it difficult to find much info. I didn't know that Stockton had a BMD site. Thank you.

Jane Lishman   30y

You can still use Hugh wallis' numbers on the new familysearch site, just becomes a 2-step process.
Use the advanced search and whack in the batch number.

Thank you, Alan. This is more grist to the mill and will help me to go further back for my friend. They always seem to want to know how far you have gone, rather than the information you have found!!

Hi, Hope I can help on this. I have researched this Lishman family extensively for many years and I believe that you are following the wrong family line. I disagree with the findings as follows.
1.   There is no William Lishman born in 1887 with a father called Matthew born in 1850. (See the 1891-1911 censuses)
2.   I have found no Matthew Lishman born in 1850 at all. (See the FreeBMD site).
3.   The Matthew Lishman born in 1839 that other people have mentioned (2yrs old in the 1841 census) did not marry, or have any children.
4.   There are also several other dates for the given people that are not correct. For example from the sites available online (backed up by family documentary evidence) William born in 1850 did not die in 1912. Also  none of this Lishman family line married a Jessie McMenemy.
5.   Therefore Margaret Maccaw Lishman and William Lishman born on 30-9-1887 are not related to Matthew Lishman born in 1805.
Before you go any further with your research I suggest you look at William Lishman born in 1887 again and that you try looking at the censuses to track down his family/the name of his father and go back from there.
I hope that this information helps as I do not wish to think of you wasting time on the wrong family line.
Best Wishes
Krysa

Hi, Krysa,
Thank you for your posting recently. Sorry I have not replied earlier but have been away again - the beauty of retirement.
I have sent your findings on to my friend. You are correct in that we were investigating the wrong Lishman family. I have re-read her original letters to me and the information was so garbled and mixed - no wonder I mixed up the families !! When she replies, hopefully with the correct details I can start again.
Many thanks once again,
RobPhill.
