Title: Lisnagroat? Sarah Bovel/Bovill
Post by: mickcee on Saturday 08 October 11 11:01 BST (UK)
G,Day from Australia
My gg grandmother, Sarah Bovel/il/ille, came to NSW on the Cressy in 1856, aged 24. Records state she was a farm servant, couldn't read or write, father Samuel & mother Rachel nee Dempsey, and was from "Lisnagroat"? And that is all I have been able to gather on Sarah. She had a brother, also Samuel, already in Australia. He unfortunately drowned soon after her arrival. Can anyone over there tell where that place is? I can't find anything on the internet about it or her family there. Is the name of French origin perhaps?
Thanks
Mickcee.

Lisnagroat is a rural townland of 906 acres. Farming land. In Griffiths Valuation of 1858, there were 41 households listed there. None had a Bovil (or variant) as it’s head, but servants and people with small houses were not listed so it doesn’t mean your family were not there.

Lisnagroat is between Kilrea and Portglenone, a mile or so west of the A54 at Moyknock. It's in the civil parish of Tamlaght O'Crilly.

I found this family in the 1901 census not too far away. Don't know if there is any connection:

Hi, I think I see 2 possible further siblings for Sarah

Anne Eliza Bovill married Peter Pinkington TAMLAGHT UPPER (O'CRILLY) (CI), Co. Londonderry, 1850, Anne's father is recorded as Samuel Bovill, the civil record of this marriage is recorded at Ballymoney, Co. Antrim for some reason. Vol 2 page 231

Rachel Boville married James Falknor TAMLAGHT UPPER (O'CRILLY) (CI), Co. Londonderry,1859, Rachel's father recorded as Samuel Boville, again the civil record of this marriage is recorded at Ballymoney Vol 2 page 208

The name seems to have stronger associations with County Antrim more so than Londonderry.

Regards

Joe

Actually, this area comes under Ballymoney (Co. Antrim) registration district although it is in County Londonderry which sometimes causes confusion.
