Title: James MARSHALL born Fife c.1800
Post by: stewnkez on Saturday 08 October 11 07:14 BST (UK)
Forgive me if I am in the wrong area. My gg grandfather James Marshall stated on one of his children's birth certifictes (in Australia) that he was born in Markinch, Fife. Is there such a place?

His age varied with each of his children's birth certificates so it seems he was born sometime between 1800 and 1805, give or take.

At his death he had been in Australia aprox 30 years so he must have come to Australia approx. 1830.
I think his parents' names were John Marshall and Margaret Robinson.

Can anybody help/advise me where to go from here?

Thanks, Kerry

Hi Kerry

Did his parent's names come from the informant on his death record?

The IGI has a record for a  Mary MARSHALL born & chr in Markinch 1798 with parents John MARSHAL & Margaret ROBISON. It's on Batch C114475  (Markinch births, extracted)

On the same batch, are a number of records of issue to a John MARSHAL & Marg(a)ret ROBERTSON:
James 1800
William 1802
Margaret 1804
John 1805
Ann 1809
Alexander 1811
Isobel 1812

I think Mary b 1798 may be part of the same family.  I have seen ROBISON and ROBERTSON in early record as interchangeable, before.

There is also a marriage on the IGI:
John MARSHALL & Margaret ROBERTSON, 5 Nov 1797, Falkland Fife.

Cheers

Hi AMBLY,

This looks like it could be the family.
Yes, the parents' names were on his death certificate, info furnished by his wife who couldn't write (x her mark) so, the Robinson/Robison/Robertson spelling could well be just an aural mistake on any or all documents back then.
It seems I might now have siblings for dear old gg grandfather James.
Thank you so much for your help. :) :)
