Title: Help dating a picture
Post by: daisy65 on Thursday 06 October 11 19:47 BST (UK)
I would really appreciate any help with dating this photograph.
This is a copy of a family picture but we are not sure who it is of. It says "grandmother" on the back but we need help working out which relative it could be. It is only a copy of a copy so I am not sure what the original one was really like.
I do know that the stain on the picture was not on the original it is only in this copy.
We think it was most likely taken in Sheffield and could have been from a relative who was a midwife in the mid to late 1800's. She was still working at 72 and died 3 years later in 1903. We wondered if this could be a uniform or just normal clothing for that time. It's difficult to see in detail as I know it's not a great copy.

Thank you

Adele

I looked at the picture before I read what you had said !

My initial feeling was 1930's ... but that doesn't tie in with what you say ...

Better wait for an expert !

I'm thinking later than those dates too Lydart.

Hi thanks for your replies.
It may well be that it is later than 1900 which would rule out the midwife relative. I just have no idea myself.

I expect one of the clothing experts will pop along at some time Daisy, and give you a more accurate dating.

I'm thinking late 1930s as well, Lydart, or maybe early 1940s, but before the war when hemlines rose dramatically. Way, way after 1903 at any rate, not even close to what ladies' clothing styles were like at the turn of the century.

Cheers,
China

Like Lydart, my first reaction was 1930's (similar fashions on own photos) but could be slightly later.

Glasses? Or is it the top of an umrella/walking stick handle?

The way that she has it tucked in to her side I would think that you will find that it is her handbag rather than anything else.

OR.

Yes I think it is a handbag with a metal clasp on the top.

Well....old rowley has weighed in on this thread, and his silence on the subject of my guess at a date speaks volumes ;D ;D ;D

Daisy, there isn't anything OR doesn't know about fashion history, and as he didn't offer a correction I think you can take "late 1930s" to the bank ;D

Cheers,
China

It seems that the date fits better with another "grandmother" who passed away in 1940 at aged 77.
Thank you for all your help everyone.
