So she was still alive in 1871

1881 census Alfred shows himself as married but Susan not in the household.  Family are in Somerset and youngest child is Abram/Abraham aged 7 shown as born Jersey.  1901 census shows him b Somerset

So narrowing it down - Susan died sometime between 1873-1881

Alfred is noted as being married - but not widowed - in the 1881 census.

But in 1891 he is widowed.

So we should look for a death between 1881 and 1891?

Also, please note that Jersey deaths won't be found in the usual databases

It wasn't unusual for recent widows/widowers to still show themselves as married on the next census after their spouse died

Yes - that ties in with the 1881 entry which shows Alfred as 9 and Abram/Abraham as 7

According to Ancestry (not always 100%) but youngest child Charles Curwood was born in 1876 and died in 1876 (exact dates not provided)

Maybe Susan died in childbirth or shortly after?  Just a thought.

Thank you for the reply, according to the family Susan ran off with an islander. So thats why Alfred and the children moved off the island to Bridgewater as family says.

So she didn't necessarily die between 1871 & 1881 which is the way your post reads?

It would have been helpful if you had included that info in your post

You haven't included any details of Susans birthyear or birthplace - the 1871 census shows her born Beaminster Devon c 1848

She doesn't appear on the CI or English 1881 census under her married name.  If she was still alive and living with somebody else - it's possible she is shown under that persons surname which could make finding her very difficult

I can't find any trace of Susan 1881 onwards.  Did she stay on the Channel Islands?  She may have emigrated even?

Do you have any more specifics at all that we could go on?
