Hi I need help with the handwriting on this old document please?
-
Here's my two pennorth....
Married in the .... at Coula????
According to: the rites of the Presbyterian Church
James Anderson & Sophy Tindell. Her mark is witnessed by the Registrar or Officiating Minister, Simpson Millar. Witnesses are
William and Sarah.... Maker? Certainly the same surname.
Hope that helps.

Hi agree with all of that, but could the witnesses have the surname USHER?
Do not know what the first line means though!

WILLIAM and SARAH SLATER.

I think it could be William & Sarah Marler.......
-
If you look closely I think some of the first line has been crossed out
Married in the at Coula or Coura
Do we know what country this was in?

Cowra, NSW , Australia.
stephen123 currently has this request running on the Australian board.
Sophy has signed with her mark.

Yes, marriage at Cowra (it is in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia)
I have asked Stephen to post this snip, so that we can help determine the names of the witnesses to the marriage. So that in turn I can help follow up on the witnesses to see if they were family/friends of the families of the bride or groom. I have some off line resources for that particular area of NSW in that era. The snip is all in the handwriting of the Rev'd or his clerk, and is based on a summary of the transmitted record forwarded to the HO of the NSW BDM Registrar General's office in Sydney.
I am particularly interested in the surname/s of the witnesses ... my resources are hardcopy and by surname, and I can read that the witnesses were William (someone) and Sarah (someone) .... I think their surnames are the same as each other, BUT as to what the initial letter is .... Ummm.... I am at a loss on that ..... Most likely it is "M" as in the Rev'd was Simpson MILLER ...
Cheers, JM

Hi
A bit late - I read the surname of the two witnesses as Maker

Thanks gnu, I think I have some with that surname in that area at that time ;D I am sure I can see the "M" at the beginning and the "er" at the end of the surname ...
Do you read the two surnames the same as each other? (I do, but then that's just my own view) ...
Cheers, JM

OK, some further questions
Is the surname MAKEN or MAKER (I have one of each, both are William :) on my off line resources ::) ::) ::) )
Cheers, JM

Both surnames the same - Maker from what I see - cf. the n in Anderson.

Could it Be MARTEN?
The vicar does not cross his t but does dot his i in Presbyterian.

I see most of the ts crossed - e.g. Witness, at, the rites

Maker for me - look at the M and the r in Millar.

Thanks Ronin56,
I have run with the MAKER surname and found a glimmer of a possibility of a connection between a chap surnamed MAKER and the groom (surnamed ANDERSON), but a better glimmer of a possibility with the bride (nee TINDLE/TINDELL/TINDALL) fingers crossed I am not mis-leading Stephen (the OP).
PS, on the NSW BDM marriage certificates from that era (1890's) the printed "Married in the" is often partly struck through by clergy so that it is meant to read "Married at Cowra" with the "in the" being made redundant by the striking though of those two words.

Hi I need help with the handwriting on this old document please?
I took a look at your document and deciphered it as William and Sarah Marler. I wonder if you had any luck in finding out more information - was it indeed Maker?
Can I ask the date of the documents and where the marriage took place as some of my relatives were both Sarah and William Marler (married).
Thanks
Lisa

The surname looks like Maker but I wonder if it's supposed to be Maher?
Definitely doesn't start with S - his capital S has a long tail on it.

Hi Lisa,
The marriage took place at the Presbyterian Church, in Cowra which is a town in the Central West of New South Wales, Australia.
Stephen123 last posted at RChat on 24 March 2013. Perhaps if you send a PM to Stephen he will be able to answer your question in more detail.
In the meanwhile, may I ask .... When and where were your Sarah and William alive?
Cheers, JM

I see it clearly as MASTER. Both the same name. Hannah
