Title: Thomas Day born Cork 1833-6
Post by: Deb0na1r on Monday 03 October 11 20:11 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am trying to trace information on my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Day who I believe came to England in about 1848. He worked as a steam boiler maker on the railways and I can trace him on the UK 1871, 1881 and 1891 census. He married Elizabeth Davis from Kidderminster, had several children (the first born in West Bromwich 1859-61) and moved from Staffordshire to Derbyshire to Rawmarsh, Yorkshire. Each census shows him as born in Cork, I believe he was catholic but cannot trace any information (including marriage certificate) prior to the 1871 census.
Wondering if anyone could help?
Much obliged,
Debra

You would need to try and work out which part of Co. Cork your Day family lived so you can check what church records are available. I think it would be worth a further search for the marriage to try to establish the name and occupation of Thomas's father

RC parish records for part of Co. Cork (the south west of the county) are available on www.irishgenealogy.ie

Thanks Shane,
I think you have answered me on this subject once before and suggested I order a copy of the birth certificate of one of the children, Lucy, to get the mother's maiden name. I got the certificate and it shows the mother as Elizabeth Davis but I still cannot find the marriage, the first child James was born 1859 or 1861 West Bromwich so I thought it might be just before then but still not finding it, or James's birth. An elderly relative reckons Thomas was catholic and came over about 1848 to make boliers for the railways which is why he moved around a lot.

The problem with Co. Cork is that it is the largest county in Ireland and there are over  100 RC parishes, not all of which have records back to the 1830s - so I think knowing a location, or other clues like father's name and occupation could be vital to confirm, or rule out, any baptisms you might find.

to get an idea of the parishes and dates available see :

   RC parishes East Cork (http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/corkerc.htm)
RC Parishes North West Cork (http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/corknwrc.htm)
   RC Parishes South West (http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/corkswrc.htm)

Ok, thanks Shane, yes I really could do with tracing the marriage for more information, it's driving me crazy, will keep on trying.

The father's name could be a useful clue - but unfortunately the really vital detail is the location.

Have you double checked all the later census returns to see if any give a more detailed location than 'Cork' ?

1871 transcribed "Wilster" which I take as Ulster, 81 & 91 "Cork", 1901, the year he died just "Ireland".

Thanks anyway,

Debbie

.....

where is Thomas during the 1871 census ?

Ulster makes no sense if he was born in Cork..

Yes I had discounted the Ulster reference, they were in Rawmarsh,  Yorkshire 1871.

here's an extract of that census return showing the place of birth,  in case anyone can make anything else out of it.
