Title: Slate miners choir
Post by: talf on Monday 03 October 11 19:35 BST (UK)
This wonderful photo has an inscribed slate which i cant decipher. I think part of it says "happy days". I wonder if anyone can apply their skills. (it may be in welsh because i believe that photo was taken in Bethesda at the turn of the century.

Hi Talf :)

I can see the word "Choir" under "Days" but can't read the rest.  Can you possibly get a better scan of it?  This one is only 96dpi.  A scan of the sign at 600dpi in full colour mode would give the best chance of deciphering...

Cheers

Hi talf, if you scan just the sign (not the whole picture) is it still too big?

There's a resizing tutorial at the top of the board which may help:

I can only guess it says
HAPPY DAYS (not sure looks a lot like MAY)
......THE CHOIR  (or L.....SHIRE CHOIR)
.....................CUP
....T........ERA.............

rest is unreadable to whatever I tried.. maybe osmeone has better eyes than mine! :D

The top line might say "CADDY" with an underline.
Then possibly "MAY DAY"
then "... CHOIR"

But the rest I'm stumped on  :-\

Got it a bit better by inverting it and playing around with levels but there's so little contrast in the original that it's very difficult to bring out the detail.

Many thanks. I did not expect responses so soon. It was almost an impossible ask because i did not have the original. You gave it your best bash and i much appreciate all your efforts. I have long admired this section of Rootschat and often amazed by the results you get. You are brilliant.
I talked to someone recently who paid £35 for a cleaned up photo(apparently the cheapest quote)
many thanks

You're welcome Talfryn, just sorry we could not decipher more of it for you.

Yes, the restorers here are a great bunch and do it just for the love of it!   :)
