Title: The Clews Family
Post by: Kathc on Monday 05 March 07 00:43 GMT (UK)
I am hoping that someone in the Bradford area can help me.

I have been looking for the birth details of my husbands Grand parents for months, there names are John Clews and Alice Marther Kitchen, I have ther marriage cert and they where married in Bootle, West Derby, in 1905.

I am assuming that they lived or worked in that area, but I know that they came to live in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, and died hear, from the details on the marriage cert his father was called William Clews, and her father Marmaduke Kitchen, with a name like that I thought it would be easy to trace her but no.

I have had a lot of help from different people and we think we have her family but I must get her birth cert to be sure, now a few months ago on the GR site on the hot matches, a lady called Cheryl Adams, was looking for an Alma Victoria Clews, born 1920 in Middlesbrough, and I know that she was the one of there daughters, from my husbands stepsister.
I have been told that Alma and her sister Doris, went to live in Bradford, I was hoping that this Cheryl Adams would be able to give me some information that would help me trace them, but I have try ed and try ed to get in contact with her but think she must be a lapsed member of the GR site, and thought some one mite know of her or the clews family.

There is no harm in trying and I have got everything crossed for a lead.

Thank you in hope Kathc

Hi Kathc

I Have just embarked on the journey of trying to discover details about my family history, my surname is Clews. I was born in Middlesbrough, my fathers name was Raymond Clews, born April 8th 1931. Your husband is my cousin
For the last few evenings I have been reading your posts. I'm amazed by your efforts putting together the Clews family tree.
I had never met my father and by searching my family tree I have only just known of his death June 1987.
I have always wondered about the origins of the Clews name and like you I want to show to my son his family roots.
I have my fathers birth certificate and I'm ordering his death certificate. I'm confused like you as to the history surrounding his parents John and Alice. I cannot find any definitive evidence as to Johns father Williams history.
I'm following your posts with great interesrt. Well done you for all your efforts!!

Hi Kathc

Information re living people removed

I know from Raymond's birth certificate that his parents were John and Alice and they married in Bootle 1905 and Johns father is William that's as far as I have got with the Clews family tree.
I was hoping by following your previous posts I could get up to speed with this.

I cannot find any definitive evidence as to Johns father Williams history.

Although the father of John Clews appears on most records as William, I am reasonably sure that he was born as Thomas William and that he discarded Thomas when he was older.

1881 Census - The parents (http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_3069131&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99)

1881 Census - William and family (http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_1120099&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99) showing him with wife, Elizabeth and children, George, Elizabeth and Ellen. John was born in 1881 after the census had been taken.

Unfortunately, the family do not appear together on later census returns but it is possible to tie them together by indirect means.

Wife, Elizabeth died before 1891 and William had remarried to Mary. They appear in 1891 with daughter, Ellen and two other children.

William’s other children, Elizabeth and John, can be found with relatives in 1891.

Lizzie is still with Samuel and Hannah in 1901 (RG13/2733/153/2) and Hannah’s birthplace is shown as Bridgnorth, as it is in 1881 when Samuel and Hannah have her sister, Alice Clewes, living with them. Samuel Farley married Hannah Clews in 1864. She was the older sister of (Thomas) William.

In 1871 Q4, John Clowes [sic] married Clara Hooker and at the same time, his sister Mary Ann married William Riddell.

In 1881 Q1, Clara’s sister, Esther Hooker, married Thomas James Bunker. John Clews, who is with this couple in 1891, is not strictly their nephew but he is the nephew of John Clews and Clara Hooker.

I am convinced that the various direct and indirect links shown above indicate who John’s parents and grandparents etc were.

See what you think. If you agree, it should be possible for someone to fill in more details for the wider family, if required.
