Title: 1851 - Coleorton Pottery
Post by: bagpuss on Saturday 07 May 05 01:08 BST (UK)
Hello All,

I have recently found out that descendents of mine owned and ran a pottery in Coleorton in the late 1800's (Thank-you Denis).  In 1842 the pottery became known as Wilson and Proudman. In 1861/71 Thomas Wilson was listed on the census records as Earthenware manufacturer.  In 1851 he is shown living in Newbold as clerk to his mother who is an Earthenware Manufacturer.

I would dearly love to know who is living at Coleorton Potworks in 1851 (and 1841) and if the name Wilson or Proudman crop up.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sue   :)

Thank-you, Thank-you Mike you are an angel   :-*

That is just the information I was looking for, and the 1841 listing too !!  Its now obvious that they were already in charge of the Potworks by this time.  I was also expecting Thomas Wilson snr. to be head of the family, but I can now see that Elizabeth was already widowed by 1841, this should now enable me to track down when he died.

Great stuff!!  I am deeply grateful   :D :D

Hi Sue

I am interested in Coleorton pottery.

Thomas Wilson snr died 29 dec 1840, he is buried in the graveyard  at Breedon on the Hill
his dealth certicate reports decay of nature and his gravestone describes the later part of his life as of  great affliction.

Do you know much about the wilson or the  proudmans?

I saw your earlier message, which of Williams many children are you descended from?

Regards
Pete

Hello Pete,

I have already sent you this message via the "personal message" facility, but just in case you haven't received it properly I've posted it on this board also.   ;D

I was chuffed to get your message.  I've been trying to find someone who has an interest in Coleorton Pottery for ages with no luck.  I have been in contact with a very nice chap called Denis Baker who is a local historian and has given me a bit of info, and I've been trying to piece together the various bit & pieces I have.

It's quite funny that you contacted me now actually, as yesterday I visited the area and tried to establish where the pottery might have been, I also went to Sharpe's Pottery Museum in Swadlincote - but it was closed     I came away more than a little disappointed.  At least I got a general feel for the area & layout.  I now believe I was the wrong side of the A42 and the Pottery was nearer to Lount.

My GG-Grandfather was Thomas Evans Wilson who was a Potter in Stoke upon Trent, and his son Wilfred was my G-Grandad, also a Potter.  Are you descended from the Wilson's or Proudman's?  Thank-you for the info on Thomas's death.  I hadn't known when he died - I shall now be able to send for his death certificate to add to my growing collection.  Was he also involved in the Pottery?  I know nothing before 1841.  I have got a death certificate for Elizabeth Wilson, but Thomas is described as "Farmer", so I was unsure if I'd got the right Elizabeth!

The only information I have is from the Census returns, from which I can see the title "Earthenware Manufacturer" moves from Elizabeth (1851) to her son Thomas (61 & 71), and to William (81).  I'd love to add more "meat to the bones", so if there's anything you can add please get in touch.

Kind Regards
Sue

Hello Sue

I was thrilled to find your post here, I too am interested in the Potworks, Cole Orton.  I am descended from William Wilson and his wife Elizabeth Simms.  William is listed as earthenware master employing 17 men, 11 young women and 3 boys at the Potworks, Cole Orton in 1881.  He was born about 1818 in Bardon Hill, Leics, but I have no info on his parents/siblings.  His third son, Henry John Wilson (b 1843, Swadlincote) was my gggrandfather (my grandmother was Doris Wilson).
Everything I have on the Wilsons can be seen at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Esprostonfamily/3902.htm

It's my mother's 76th birthday soon and I would love to be able to give her additional information about her mother's family - any information at all you might have would be really really helpful.

In return I have the 1871 and 1891 census for Staffordshire and would be happy to do a look-up for you if you need one.

Best wishes

Susan

Hi Susan,    ;D    ;D    ;D

I was thrilled to get your message.  I am descended from Wilfred Wilson, son of Thomas Evans Wilson.  I have been researching this side of the family for a little while now and have received invaluable help from Peter Marsden (above), whose wife is also descended from William Wilson - Thanks Peter.   ;)

I have sent you a personal message so we can correspond.  By the way - what a fantastic web-site, you have obviously worked very hard on your family research.

All the best,
Sue    :)

Hello Sue and Pete.

First of all - a tremendous thank you for the links and information in this thread!
William Wilson: Born: 08 Dec 1818  Bardon Hill, Leics    is my Great Great Grandfather!
His Daughter Ellen Gilbert had a daughter Edith, whose son Ronald is my father!
My brother and I have been tracing our routes for some time and your info has made the wilson connection a rich vein and taken us back a longer way than other links.
We have, through various family bibles and other sources, scratched together a lot of data and perhaps can offer more detail to you within the tree with which i am connected.
I noticed a missing sibling in the william wilson's list for example - we also have a William T Wilson born 1873
And also - in the siblings for his father Thomas Wilson, we have a first born William Wilson who was born in 1802 (died : 26 Mar 1814)
I would love to share any more data you might have that can enable us to go back further in time from Thomas Wilson in particular.

Stuart.

Hi Stuart

I am keen to learn anything you have about the Wilsons. My wife is also descended from Ellen but via her son Gilbert

My best guess had always been that willam wilson (bapt 7.11.1802) was a sibling of william wilson born 1818/19 (I assumed they had reused the name after the first wiliam had died) but I am happy to be corrected. Where did you get william wilson's date of birth from?

Regards
Pete

Hi Sue and others in the Coleorton Pottery thread.

I have an ancestor (Ruth Gough) who was a servant to Thomas Wilson (b1805 Derbyshire) living in Coleorton in 1861 census. This describes him simply as a 'manufacturer' and a widower. Is he any relation to 'your Wilsons'? Think I've found him in 1871 listed as an earthenware manufacturer. Also would be interested to know about Coleorton pottery as I can't find any info on it.

Many thanks

Margaret

Hi Dorothy 13,
I and my sons are blood-line descendant of Samuel Stewart b.1768. in Lount and I have written a comprehensive study on the Stewart's of Lount. I believe that John and William Stewart born in 1776 and 1772 respectively were either brothers or cousins of Samuel, but have not been able to prove this to date.  The study naturally focuses on Samuel and his descendants up to the present day, but I have included info on the other Stewarts where available.

I have also combined this with a basic history of Coleorton Pottery. As you will know, the influence of the "Stewarts of Lount" on the Coleorton Pottery was considerable and living on the doorstep, they provided permanent as well as casual labour over a long period.

I am also in touch with another Stewart, who is a descendant of William and Elizabeth. You are obviously researching this particular line of Stewarts, as the Ann you mention was born to William and Elizabeth c.1817 in Stauton Harold. It could be argued that this particular line of Stewarts played the more important roles in the actual running of the Coleorton Pottery during the ownership period of Thomas Wilson. My grandfather actually raised four children in Pottery Row.

Hope this is of interest
