Title: GIBSON family
Post by: corblimey on Sunday 02 October 11 00:55 BST (UK)
Can anyone help with my research on the Gibson family?  Frank Montagu Hillyard GIBSON married Louisa Letitia CROLE in Cape Town in 1873.  He was born in Madras, India 1852-1854, lived in Jersey, Channel Islands and ended up in Sydney, where I believe he died in 1929.  He had a brother Claude Aislabe Vign Gibson who married Edith Marian Clayton in London in 1881.  I would also like to find out what happened to Claude and Edith after their marriage as they do not appear on any UK census after their marriage.

Did Frank or Claude have any children?  Also, their father Thomas Wheatley Gibson died in South Africa in 1884.  Can anyone help with information about his death and/or burial?

If his parents were Thomas & Isobella then this is his probably his death registration in NSW.
A transcription of it will give you the names of his wife & children (if he had any).

GIBSON Frank d.1929 GRENFELL #23565
Parents: THOMAS & ISOBELLA

thank you for your help and interest.  It is much appreciated.
It is interesting that the NSW BDM have a Louisa Gibson, father William, Mother Mary A, death registered in Sydney in 1907.  That threw me off the scent, particularly as there is also a Frank Gibson death registered in NSW in 1929, father Thomas, mother Isobella.  Frank Montague Hillyard Gibson's parents were Thomas and Isabella.

However, I am inclined to go with your record in Richmond as Frank Montague Hillyard Gibson was being looked for by a firm of solicitors, stating that he was formerly of Richmond.

Many thanks, again.

Due to the efforts of Rosball, Crisane and Merlin, I have now been able to further my research and have found a second marriage for Frank Montague Hillyard Gibson in Richmond, Victoria and another daughter born of this second marriage, Constance Ella May Gibson.  Now I will start looking for the two daughters' families.  Thank you all again  :)

thank you Merlin.  Where do you find this information?  I only seem to get so far on the IGI and Ancestry.  Are there websites that I should be looking at so that I can be of more help to myself and not rely on the hard work and kindness of others?

If you are still researching this line, I have information about the Gibson family going back to the beginning of the 18th century. Thomas Wheatley Gibson's father, Lt Colonel John Thomas Gibson, was the son of East India Company broker Bowes John Gibson, who was the younger brother of my 5 x great grandmother Elizabeth Gibson.

I've written about the Gibsons at my blog, Past Lives. Follow the link below and look under the 'Gibson' category, or use the search box. Happy to be contacted, too:

Best wishes
Martin Robb

PS Thank you for the information about Thomas Wheatley Gibson's family, which I've found very helpful. Did you know the family was living in Jersey at the time of the 1861 census?

I can't help with your specific query but if you want to know about Thomas Wheatley Gibson's family tree, I can certainly help. He was the son of John Thomas Gibson, who was the son of Bowes John Gibson, who was the son of John Gibson (1699 - 1763) - who was my 6 x great grandfather (and I can go back two more generations from him).

If you want to know more about the earlier Gibson generations (and they're certainly an interesting bunch), you can read about them on my family history blog, 'Past Lives'. Just follow this link:

http://mprobb.wordpress.com/category/gibson/

To contact me, leave a comment on the blog and I can send you further information - including wills, etc, if you need them.

In return, I'd be really interested to learn more about Thomas Wheatley, his family, and the other descendants of Bowes John Gibson.

Best wishes
Martin Robb

Constance Ella May Gibson came to New Zealand and married my cousin Sinclair Macalister 1916/5358 https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz. I have her in my family tree https://www.geni.com/people/Constance-Macalister/6000000044812270891 but I'm not sure if they had any children. There's one listed with the name Beryl Hunt born 1917 but the record seems strange 1917/1154 https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz

Yes, the Beryl Hunt entry is a mystery.  Perhaps she was supposed to be Beryl Hunt Macalister?  Or just an error in the entry at the time?  They had another child in 1921, stillborn.  I can't find any other children for them.

Frank Montagu Hillyard Gibson had a son, Eric Hugh Meredith Gibson born 1873 Western Cape, South Africa, died 1932 Maidstone, Victoria and a daughter Maude Isabelle Louisa Gibson born 1883 Richmond (mother Louisa Crole).  She moved to New Zealand and married Alfred George Lucas on 6 April 1904.  They lived in Wanganui and had four children.

I am hoping to find more information, through Gibson family members, on Claude Aislabe Vign Gibson (Frank's younger brother) and his first wife Edith Marion Clayton (married London 1881).

I have just found a Mrs C Macalister, 31, born Victoria travelling from Sydney to NZ in 1922 with Master B Macalister, 6.  Record says that he was also born Victoria so am not sure if this is Constance, and her son's birthplace was incorrectly entered on the passenger record.  It is conceivable, with a mother and father in Australia, that she might travel to visit them.

My mother found out that Beryl changed her name by deed poll to Hunt. She had a son Richard Sinclair Hunt (born Macalister) in 1945.

Hello, I appreciate this is a really old thread, but my Great Grandfather's birth certificate had the name Frank Montague Hillyard Gibson crossed out on it.  Just done Ancestry and the DNA links into "cousins" with his name.  CORBLIMEY - if you are still on here, it would be good to connect as it as always been a bit of a mystery on our side of the family.  Thanks.
