Title: port glasgow families role call

I am researching a number of linked families from Port Glasgow 19Th/20Th century, all originally came form Ireland, the names are  Mcigrew, Mcilvennie, Mcsloy Cushnahan, Heigney Mcglin, Mcgurk, many of the names had local spellings and variantions but would love to find out if anyone else is researching any of these families.
Most of the men worked in the shipyards, does anyone know if there are any lists of men and the yard they worked in?
Also what would a blacksmith do in a shipyard?

I remember reading somewhere that there are no list for the shipyard workers
I will see if I can find it again,
I wondered at this as how did they keep records of the men who worked there  ???
are you looking for info on the family names you posted or just hoping to hook up with
people researching these names,
a blacksmith would probably have made all sorts of parts for the ships.

Thanks to Elaine and Sharon for the replies, I have a lot of info about the families but more is always welcome particulary any photos and a chance to share my info if anyone wants it. I had found the Port Glasgow web site and it is really an excellent source of information.

Janet,

    Couldn't figure how to reply from your post to me, However, I don,t yet know yet if any of my Mcgurks from Dunnamore, Kildress Parish went to Scotland.  Some of the Kildress people who went to Chicago or Joliet in Illinois did intermarry. I am trying to sort out Kildress people in Illinois out. City directories show different families at same address sometimes. Church records can sometimes show sponsors or witnesses who are relatives.  It appears the majority of Co Tyrone people went to New York and Pennsylvania. Often sone of the kids went went west to US Midwest or to West Coast, California, Washington and Oregan.

King families in the area all seem to share the same names :(

Hi I am lead to believe that strathclyde university hold old employee record of some of the shipyards in Port Glasgow and Greenock.

My family immigrated to PortGlasgow from Ireland as well .Also one of my ancestors married a McGurk .McCrorey used to be spelled McRory when they were in Ireland .

Can also be spelt as McCrory, MacRory, Magrory etc.
