Title: Looking for John MACKENZIE-Kiltarlity,Inverness
Post by: eilsjo on Saturday 01 October 11 08:29 BST (UK)
I am looking for the parents of John MACKENZIE, born in Kiltarlity, Inverness on 2 May 1889. I think his father name was also John, not sure of mothers though. John Mackenzie emigrated to Australia and enlisted in the WW1 in 1915. Any help would be most appreciated  :)

Hi Eilsjo,

Welcome to rootschat.

Your tree on An...try has John's parents as John & Betsy, where did that info come from? Are you just assuming that it is them from the 1891 census you have?

Well Betsy was the closest I found to the very little information I could find out.,  But really not sure Betsy is correct, so did not want to misinform anyone. Thanks Sharon.

There was a link going around for non UK based nationals which gave free credits for Scotland's People. I will have a look to see if I can find it.

Yes ev, it is.  That is why I know his father's name was John. There also seems to be a confusion with the spelling of his surname. He appears to spell it McKenzie here.  Not sure why. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated

Dropping the a from Mac was quite common, so I would not let that confuse you. Some info here.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?560

The family you found in 1891 are living in the same Street at number 4 in 1901 census.

John Mackenzie 50 Piermaster (1891 has Postmaster so could be mis transcibed, do not have access to original).
Elizabeth Mackenzie 49
Barnabas Mackenzie 17
John Mackenzie 12
Grace Mackenzie 9
Maggie Mackenzie 8

All down as born Inverness.

Thanks Sharon for info re Mac n Mc, very interesting.
Also the Mackenzie info would fit perfectly with the age of John born in 1889. Also Elizabeth is also Betsy! I'm very excited now, thank you very much  :)
