Hello All,
I found a reference to a baptism for an Edward Mensforth as follows:
Edward Mensforth - 1816 - Durham, Durham
I wonder if SKS might be able to have a quick look for me......I have been searching for ever for my Edward Mensforth's baptism, his father is supposed to be John Mensforth (shipwright) according to his marriage cert....but have never been able to find him ::) He always states Northumberland as his birthplace in census returns....but at North Shields which is very close to Durham county....
Let me know if you are able to check this one out ;)
Thanks
Jenny

Hello Glitterlamp ;D
Thank you soooo much for the lookup!
Pity there were no occupation details for John, but it certainly is promising as this is the first baptism I have found that shows an Edward Mensforth with a father named John in the right year!!
Could I ask another super quick favour.....are there any other children to this couple? Just in case the names match in with my Mensforth family ...might give me more to go on too :)
Thanks again

Hi you can look at the baptism yourself, on Family Search Durham Durham 1773-1869 page 325, John and Mary lived in Church street and he was a Gardener.

Thanks JR, didn't realise it was on Family Search ;)
Hmmm...a gardener does seem likely to change profession to a shipwright though.....
I'll have a look now

JR, I have found Edward's baptism...thanks for your help ;)
But I was just wondering however did you know where to look, is there an index to the Durham records on Family search or do I just scroll through the pages to find possible siblings??

Unfortunately there is no index you just have to scroll though looking for who and what you know.

For the record, the baptism is also available on Durham Records Online (a pay-per-view site)

Did John marry a Mary Maugham?
If so they had a son John born 8 Dec 1804, bapt. 17th Feb. 1805. and John was a joiner.
This is in St Nicholas, Durham,
Family Search 1740-1836 p149.

Thanks JenB & JR......I see a lot of scrolling in the near future ;)
I will check out both the Family Search records and Durham Records online.
I see that Family Search's Durham records also include nearby Northumberland....might be worth cheching those too :)
Jenny
P.S - JR I have no idea who John married, or if he even is my John..but will keep all the records just in case they eventually fit in somewhere....there aren't that many Mensforth's at least!

I see that Family Search's Durham records also include nearby Northumberland...
This is because the records you are looking at the the Diocese of Durham Bishop's Transcripts - and until the late 19th century the Diocese of Durham included most of Northumberland. The Diocese of Newcastle, which covers Northumberland, was only created in 1882.

Thanks JenB, that makes sense now ;)
