Can anybody help? A John Cordiner married a Janet Dalgarno in Cruden, Aberdeen on 24 March 1791 and had a son John on 1 December 1796 in Old Deer, Aberdeen. I wondered if anybody could tell me if John & Janet had anymore children. Another information on this family is very much appreciated.
Thanks

According to Scotland's People, that would seem to be the only birth.

Thanks Malky
I did try scotlands people and like you couldn't find anyone else. I just thought that was really unusal, as in those days everybody seem to have a big family of at least 5+.

Problem is, at that time, registering births was not mandatory, so not every birth was. It depended on the financial constraints on the individual family at that time.
A John Junior is in the 1851 + 1861 + 1871 census for Old Deer, farm called Smalburn, 6 to 8 acres.

Where did you get the information about the marriage ? Have you viewed the actual entry or was it just the index? There may be place names/occupations mentioned. Have you found any death entries for the couple? There may be a headstone somewhere. The pre registration records are for the established Church of Scotland. The Cordiners may have been baptised in St.James Episcopal Church in Cruden (in which case they won't show in scotlandspeople) If John senior was a fisherman his family are more likely to have all been born in the same parish. The John Cordiner mentioned by Flattybasher was a farmer. If his dad was an agricultural labourer, there's a good chance he'd have moved frequently & his offspring could have been born in different parishes! What does the christening record for John in Old Deer state? Any witnesses (possible relatives) named?

The Cordiners may have been members of the Free Church of Scotland.

Scotland's People records.
Surname :- Cordiner.
Location :- Old Deer.
1st :- 1796.
2nd :- 1835
3rd :- 1838
4th :- 1842.
Presumably, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th are children of John the recorded "farmer", (I have not opened the records) but there may have been a family link with the parents of the first birth in 1796.
The father son names of John and John are interesting in relation to John Jn'r and the births registered for c1790 +- 10 years Scotland. (Births 1781 and 1796)
Marriage of John Cordiner and Jean Keith, Old Deer, 1835.
Birth/Christening of Jean Keith, 20 DEC 1814 Old Deer, Aberdeen, Scotland, to Alexander Keith and Catherine Watt.
Birth/Christening of Jean Keith, 24 NOV 1816 Old Deer, Aberdeen, Scotland, to John Keith and Jean Ironside.
Perhaps, that is where the "Farmer" link comes from, especially if the wife is giving the details.
It's only a suggestion.

For this area in the 18th and early 19th century, it is always worth checking the records of the Episcopal Church. It is not uncommon for some baptisms or the marriage to be found in the Church of Scotland records and others to be found in the Episcopal ones. I have found this in the case of several of my ancestors from Old Deer, Longside and the surrounding parishes.

SP has a 1921 marriage for a Janet Dalgarno to a Fairley Hamilton and another in 1933, Janet Dalgarno to an Andrew Findlay. Both Aberdeenshire.
Don't know if either of these are relevant. You will have to pay to find out.
